SUMMARY:Laughing Whitefish Audubon Program
DESCRIPTION:Gary Palmer and Skye Haas spent the springs of 2013 and 2014 on Peninsula Point\, documenting bird species at as they migrated north from Lake Michigan. Located at the tip of Delta County’s Stonington Peninsula\, Peninsula Point is arguably the most spectacular migration hotspot in the Upper Peninsula. Each spring\, thousands of birds pass through this area\, many stopping for a time to replenish their fat reserves to power the next legs of their journeys. It is clearly a crucial spot for the migration of a plethora of birds from diverse taxa\, with waterfowl\, shorebirds\, and songbirds all particularly abundant. \nLaughing Whitefish Audubon programs are held in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library beginning at 7:00 p.m. The library is located at 217 N. Front Street in Marquette.

SUMMARY:Grand Rapids Audubon Club trip
DESCRIPTION:One way we can help our local nesting birds is by providing places for them to nest. Jim Ponshair has aided the birds for many years with a number of bluebird box trails at the Muskegon Wastewater. This adds up to a large number of boxes\, and we need a good sized group to clean out all of these boxes every year. The annual bluebird box cleaning is a great way to learn your way around the Muskegon Wastewater. It’s also a good way to learn about bluebird boxes\, how to clean them and see how the type of box and habitat affects who uses the box. Since we’re at the Wastewater\, we usually see some good birds while we work. You may even get to meet mice or flying squirrels up close and personal. And you get to help the bluebirds\, swallows\, chickadees\, wrens and other birds that use the boxes. Meet at the Maple Island Road entrance to the Muskegon Wastewater System. There\, the group will split up to clean out boxes in different areas. Lunch will be at a local restaurant. Following lunch\, a birding extension is planned to the nearby Muskegon State Game Area to look for early migrants. This can be an all day trip\, or you can head out before or after lunch. For all the carpenters and builders out there\, Jim needs more bluebird boxes. Boxes suffer damage over the year and new boxes are always needed. Call Jim Ponshair if you have new boxes to donate. \nMeet at the Maple Island Road entrance to the Muskegon Wastewater System at 9:00 AM. This is a bit north of White Road. Come dressed for the weather. Bring your spotting scope if you have one\, and bring some tools (screwdrivers\, pliers\, hammer and nails) and gloves for cleaning out the bluebird houses. \nDriving in a caravan can be hazardous. Get directions from the leader for travel to the next stop. Please exercise caution on the roads at all times\, and watch the car ahead of you when driving in a caravan. Please have a passenger handle all radio or phone communications while in a car.

SUMMARY:Laughing Whitefish Audubon program
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Laurel Hill\, 2014 LWAS Avaian Research Award recipient \nLaurel will discuss her research into changes in the habitat of the Yellow Dog Plains and her investigation of how these changes affect the spruce grouse population there. She will compare data collected during the summers of 2013 and 2014 to information collected in the 1980s by Professor Bill Robinson. In the last three decades the Yellow Dog Plains have seen new roads and trails\, timber harvests and the development of the Eagle Mine. Assessment of the impact of these changes on the spruce grouse population is crucial information to help manage future development in the area. \nLaughing Whitefish Audubon programs are held in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library beginning at 7:00 p.m. The library is located at 217 N. Front Street in Marquette. \nFor more information visit http://laughingwhitefishaudubon.org

SUMMARY:South Florida Birding Tour - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:If you are a woman and would agree to share a room\, we may have any opening in this tour. Contact Wendy (information below). Thank you for your interest in the tour to Florida but it has sold out. \nJoin Bill Sweetman of Bsweet Tours for a great tour of Florida April 9-16\, 2015. Mid April in Florida is a magic time for birders.  Not only will all of the Florida specialties be present in their breeding finest\, but it’s the season when many Neotropical migrants begin passing northward through the state.  At this time the weather is generally pleasant and most “spring breakers” should be back in northern climes with their noses pressed to their textbooks. \nThis trip will concentrate on finding the “Florida specialties” and as many northbound migrants as possible.  Some\, like the larger wading birds\, are easy to find. Others\, like the Snail Kite\, Short-tailed Hawk\, Spot-breasted Oriole and Red-whiskered Bulbul can be downright difficult to nail down.   We will venture into the Keys where we will search for “Keys specialties” such as\, White-crowned Pigeon\, Black-whiskered Vireo\, Gray Kingbird\, Mangrove Cuckoo and Antillean Nighthawk (may be too early in the season). While in Key West a one day boat excursion to Garden Key in the Dry Tortugas (75 miles west of Key West) will climax this week of exciting birding. In short\, we will visit some of the best birding sites in the state from Orlando south. \nOne delightful feature of this trip is the opportunity to get close to many beautiful birds\, providing wonderful close-up photo ops. \n•    Included:  Transportation from the departure point in Orlando\, lodging\, breakfasts & picnic lunches\, beginning the 10th and ending with breakfast on the 16th\, all entry fees\, Dry Tortugas boat trip and leadership.\n•    Cost of the trip is $1390 Double Occupancy:  Single Occupancy add $380\n•    Deposit $450 due at registration.\n•    Lodging will be in Best Western and Choice chain motels. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/south-florida-birding-trip-tickets-15471469582

SUMMARY:Grand Rapids Audubon Club trip
DESCRIPTION:Join leader Steve Minard to look for marsh birds at Lane’s Landing in the Muskegon State Game Area.  We might be a bit early\, but Swamp Sparrows should be on territory in the marsh and rails should be in the area by this date. After checking out the marsh\, we’ll see how the wind blows and either head over to the Muskegon Wastewater to check out the waterfowl\, or head to Grand Haven to check out Harbor Island and hawk watch locations to look for migrating hawks. At the Wastewater\, Northern Shoveler and Ruddy Duck are likely; in Grand Haven\, we could see Caspian Tern on Lake Michigan or a Peregrine Falcon at the power plant. Birders of all skills are welcome. \nMeet at the Boy Scout Headquarters west off Walker Road just north of I-96 at 7:00 AM. We plan to bird until noon; you may want to bring a snack to hold you over until lunch. \nSafety Hazards: Driving in a caravan can be hazardous. Get directions from the leader for travel to the next stop. Please exercise caution on the roads at all times\, and watch the car ahead of you when driving in a caravan.
