SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Holland Audubon Club Meeting - Misadventures of a Wannabe Wildlife Photographer
DESCRIPTION:Holland Audubon Club Meeting – “Misadventures of a Wannabe Wildlife Photographer” by Marty Keirnan \nTuesday\, March 10th\, 7:00pm \nHope Church\, 77 W. 11th St.\, Holland\, MI \nMasks optional but encouraged if you’re sniffly \nOver the past year\, Marty has been quietly clicking away on his camera\, all over Michigan\, capturing some wonderful images of birds and wildlife near and far…some in our own backyard. Come and enjoy some fantastic glimpses of these amazing creatures\, and the vistas we’ve appreciated over the years in our beautiful state of Michigan. Marty thoroughly enjoys returning year after year to some special places that offer the best shots and most of the time he’s rewarded with wonderful pictures he’s shared with us; some images you’ve seen in our newsletter over the years have been from him. Join us as he cracks open his vault to show us many of his greatest bird pictures from 2025 and beyond. \nA Holland native\, Marty earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Grand Valley then did some graduate work in Zoology at Eastern Michigan University\, where he briefly taught Zoology as an assistant. He ultimately found his calling in the field of Quality as a Quality Engineer and Quality Manager in Automotive and Aerospace manufacturing for about 35 years. Marty’s first love of Biology was never far\, however\, and\, drawn to nature photography\, got his first SLR in college\, and\, honing his skills over the years\, broadened his experience\, especially since 2020 when forced into early retirement due to Covid. The main subjects of his “focus” are birds and wildlife\, wildflowers and macro work. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Grand Rapids Audubon - Monthly Meeting - Great Lakes Piping Plover
DESCRIPTION:The Great Lakes Piping Plover with Sarah Saunders\, National Audubon Society \nMonday\, March 30\, 7:30 – 8:30 PM\nAquinas College Donnelly Conference Center\n157 Woodward Lane SE\, Grand Rapids\, MI\, 49506 \nMonthly membership meetings are FREE and open to the public. \nWe continue our theme of conservation spaces and wildlife by examining another Michigan wildlife recovery success story. The Great Lakes Piping Plover\, a federally endangered shorebird\, has made a remarkable comeback from the brink of extinction thanks to decades of dedicated conservation efforts. Join us on March 30th as Sarah Saunders tells us about the amazing comeback of this favorite Michigan species. Once reduced to just 12 breeding pairs in the 1980s\, this population now exceeds 80 pairs\, with record-breaking breeding seasons in recent years. This success is a testament to the power of science-driven conservation and the collaboration of researchers\, land managers\, and community volunteers on the Great Lakes Piping Plover Conservation Team. In this talk\, Sarah will highlight the key strategies that have fueled this recovery\, including nest monitoring and protection\, predator management\, annual banding\, captive-rearing\, and education and outreach. Sarah will also showcase how long-term banding data have further strengthened these strategies\, contributing to population growth. Despite these gains\, challenges remain\, including increasing threats from climate change and human disturbance. Yet the resilience of the population and the dedication of the Conservation Team offer hope for continued success. The recovery of the Great Lakes Piping Plover serves as an inspiring example of how rigorous science\, partnerships\, and community engagement can drive meaningful conservation outcomes. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Holland Audubon Club - Family Ties: Ferrying in Waterfowl & Pair Duets in Rails & Owls
DESCRIPTION:Holland Audubon Club Meeting April 14th\, 7pm \nHope Church\, 77 W. 11th St.\, Holland MI \n“Family Ties: Ferrying in Waterfowl & Pair Duets in Rails & Owls” by Daniel Goldberg\, PhD \nAh…the chirping\, clucking\, twittering tinkle of the birds you hear all over provide the basis for most of the studies of avian acoustic communication and parental behavior\, mostly focused on the passerines\, our colorful and sought after songbirds. Now\, however\, we’re broadening our adventures and knowledge of other birds\, just as fascinating and wonderful\, as we showcase their unique and intriguing behaviors\, in studies that are largely recorded as anecdotal\, but in fact are widespread and common. In this presentation\, Dr. Daniel Goldberg will discuss vocal duetting in owls and rails\, and parental carrying of chicks in waterbirds. Not only are these charismatic birds\, but their ways of communicating and looking after their young just might remind us of ourselves. Join us as we gain some insights into these elusive but fascinating species. \nPeoplefeeders: Harold & Jeanne Koning \nMasks optional but encouraged if you’re sniffly. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Author Visit - James McCommons\, The Feather Wars
DESCRIPTION:COMMUNITY EVENT – Oakland Bird Alliance \nJoin us for a live author event at Clarkston High School on April 9th at 7 pm. \nJames will present his new book\, “The Feather Wars” in an open discussion and will end the event with a chance to get your book signed. \nThe price of the ticket\, $36\, includes (1) copy of James’s new book\, The Feather Wars\, and event admission for (2) people. \nA portion of your ticket purchase will be donated to Oakland Bird Alliance! \nBooks will be available for pick-up at the event or in-store starting March 17th. \nAbout the Author \nJames H. McCommons is a professor emeritus at Northern Michigan University and a veteran journalist\, specializing in ecology\, environmental and travel topics. His writing has appeared in the New York Times\, the Los Angeles Times\, the Minneapolis Star Tribune\, Audubon\, Discover among other publications. He is the author of Waiting on a Train: The Embattled Future of Passenger Rail Service\, and Camera Hunter: George Shiras III and the Birth of Wildlife Photography. \nMore about THE FEATHER WARS \nThe Feather Wars is an entertaining and expansive work of American history\, a story about how disparate characters—progressive politicians\, free-thinking society belles\, nature writers and artists\, bird-loving U.S. presidents\, gunmakers\, business titans\, and brave game wardens—came together to save hundreds of species of birds. Heroes\, martyrs\, villains\, and conflicted do-gooders—the early bird conservation movement had them all. Together they transformed how Americans thought and cared about birds\, forever altering the American landscape. \nFrom the time the country was founded\, early Americans assumed that the land’s natural resources were infinite\, including its birds\, which were zealously hunted for food\, game\, and fashion. With the rapid extinction of the passenger pigeon—a bird once so numerous that its flocks darkened the sky in flight—many realized actions needed to be taken if other birds were to be saved. What followed was both a spiritual awakening and a great crusade to save birds and their habitat. The campaign took place on many battlefields: society teas in Boston\, hunt clubs on the East Coast\, the mangroves in the Everglades\, and in the editorial pages of newspapers and periodicals. From many corners of the country the bird protection movement was born and brought together a remarkable coalition of people and organizations to save America’s birds. \nhttps://www.inscribebooks.com/events \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo - Kal Haven Trail Walks
DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays in April & May – 9:00 AM \nKal Haven Trail\, Kalamazoo \nContinuing the years’ long tradition of Tuesday morning trail walks\, our weekly Kal-Haven Trail walks will be on Tuesdays at 9:00 AM in April and May\, starting April 7. We will meet and start at the trailhead on North 10th Street between G and H Avenues. A few of us walk 2.5 miles to the usually very birdy marsh at 8th Street and then back for a total of 5 miles\, but anyone can cut that short and turn around at any time. There will not be a “leader\,” although someone will be keeping a species list. \nFeel free to arrange your own spotting or shuttling of cars. The Kal-Haven Trail walks are handicap accessible. \nIf you would like to be in an email group to be notified of the latest status of the walks or to discuss weather conditions\, please send an email to Donna Keller at askpresident@kalamazooaudubon.org. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.
