SUMMARY:Red Knots & Horseshoe Crabs: A Talk by Author Deborah Cramer\, August 1
DESCRIPTION:Deborah Cramer\, author\, at Wingersheek Beach in Gloucester\, MA\, November 13\, 2014.© 2014 Shawn G. Henry • 978.590.4869 \nRed knots\, flying between Tierra del Fuego and their Arctic nesting grounds each year\, take the measure of a shoreline running the length of two continents. Its flight coincides with a different migration – that of the familiar horseshoe crab. When the moon is full in spring\, horseshoe crabs emerge from Long Island Sound and other coastal waters to lay their eggs\, a prime source of protein for Red Knots. \nIt’s a feat of biological timing that has gone on for eons. But both creatures are in peril. In many of the birds’ critical stopovers\, it is a shoreline of the Anthropocene\, increasingly reshaped by development\, overfishing\, beach erosion and storm surges. These changes are touching the knots\, listed as endangered in a number of countries along its route\, and now the first U.S. bird listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act because its future is imperiled by global warming. Author Deborah Cramer accompanied the birds along their extraordinary migration to bring back a firsthand account in her award-winning book The Narrow Edge: A Tiny Bird\, An Ancient Crab\, and An Epic Journey. Join her to explore the lives of Red Knots in a rapidly changing world\, and the work of the many scientists dedicated to providing the birds safe passage. \nCramer’s talk\, sponsored by Michigan Audubon\, is free and open to the public\, however\, attendees are asked to register by July 16. The event is part of the inaugural meeting of the newly formed American Ornithological Society and the Society of Canadian Ornithologists/Société des ornithologistes du Canada. \nIn addition to the plight of the Red Knot and the horseshoe crab\, her talk will also focus on the use of the horseshoe crab’s blue blood to detect harmful bacteria during surgery on humans\, a procedure that protects patients from life-threatening infections. \nCopies of The Narrow Edge will be for sale\, and the talk will be followed by a book signing by the author. \nHonors for The Narrow Edge:\nBest Book\, National Academy of Sciences\nRachel Carson Book Award\nWinner of the Reed Award in Environmental Writing \n>> CLICK HERE TO REGISTER BY JULY 16

SUMMARY:Workshop: Swifts in the City!
DESCRIPTION:Swifts in the City! A free workshop hosted by Michigan Audubon\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, August 8 \nTime: 7 – 8:30 p.m. \nLocation: Michigan Audubon Headquarters\, 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos\, MI 48864 \n\n\nPlease join us for Michigan Audubon’s August Workshop: Swifts in the City! Have you heard chipping and chattering above your head when you’re in an urban downtown area or neighborhood? Have you seen small “bats” flying during the daytime? Chimney Swifts are unique\, “cigar-shaped” birds that live alongside people in many cities and neighborhoods and are easily confused with bats. They play an important role as natural pest control by consuming thousands of flying insects per day. Sadly\, these birds are declining across the country\, but you can help! Join us to learn about these charming city-loving birds and find out how to help through monitoring and creating habitat. The workshop will include an indoor talk followed by a short carpool to a Chimney Swift roost location to witness the amazing spectacle of roosting behavior. This workshop is great for non-birders and birders alike\, newbies to experts. Educators or community leaders are encouraged to attend as counting swifts in the fall is a fun\, easy activity for all ages and makes for a great evening community event. And consider participating in “A Swift Night Out”\, an annual continent-wide effort that began in 2001 to raise awareness about and encourage interest in Chimney Swifts and Vaux’s Swifts. On one night (Friday\, Saturday or Sunday) over the second weekend of August and/or September observe a roost starting about 30 minutes before sunset and estimate the number of swifts that enter the site. Then submit your data to the Michigan Audubon Chimney Swift Roost Monitoring project. For more information\, visit https://www.michiganaudubon.org/our-conservation-impact/chsw/.\n\n[vc_button url=”https://www.eventbrite.com/e/michigan-audubon-workshop-series-2017-swifts-in-the-city-tickets-36513775686″ text=”>> Click here to register for Swifts in the City” size=”big” align=”left” type=”primary” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]

SUMMARY:Swifts in the City
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard chipping and chattering above your head when you’re in an urban downtown area or neighborhood? Have you seen small “bats” flying during the daytime? Chimney Swifts are unique\, “cigar-shaped” birds that live alongside people in many cities and neighborhoods and are easily confused with bats. They play an important role as natural pest control by consuming thousands of flying insects per day. Sadly\, these birds are declining across the country\, but you can help! \nJoin Rachelle Roake from Michigan Audubon to learn about these charming city-loving birds and find out how to help through monitoring and creating habitat. The workshop will include an indoor talk followed by a short carpool to a Chimney Swift roost location to witness the amazing spectacle of roosting behavior. This workshop is great for non-birders and birders alike\, newbies to experts. \n\nThis program is open to all ages. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear to be outside. We will have the program rain or shine. \nTo register for this program please follow the “Tickets” link or visit woldumar.org

SUMMARY:Avian Pigmentation
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jeffrey Mckelvey\, for the second presentation of Audubon Society of Kalamazoo’s new program season as he discusses “Avian Pigmentation.”  Birds are among the most colorful of all animals. We’ll look at some of the reasons why. Much of it is due to pigments they incorporate into their feathers. The birds synthesize some of these while others are obtained from their food. Still\, other colors are due to the refraction of light by structural elements in the feathers themselves. These various sources of color can mix and match to produce almost any hue imaginable. Thus birds can camouflage themselves to hide from predators\, make themselves attractive to potential mates and dazzle appreciative birdwatchers. \nDr. Mckelvey grew up in Latrobe\, Pennsylvania\, just east of the first ridges in the Appalachians. His family had always put out bird feeders and he could identify all the common species before learning to read. When older\, he spent much time in the mountains and woods becoming an increasingly avid bird-watcher\, which was the origin of his interest in biology.  Dr. Mckelvey received an undergraduate degree in biology at West Virginia Wesleyan College. A Ph.D. in physiology followed from Bowling Green State University.  He then moved to Grand Rapids to take a job at Aquinas College. He has been there for 31 years and currently serves as chairperson of the Department of Biology and Health Science. Dr. Mckelvey mainly teaches courses in anatomy and physiology\, but every other year he works in ornithology. He still enjoys bird-watching and talking about birds every chance he has. \nYou are invited to join us to meet and hear Dr. Mckelvey on October 23 at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Our program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear entrance of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee mug to reduce dishwashing.

SUMMARY:Those Amazing Birds Program
DESCRIPTION:Join Ed Post for the third presentation of Audubon Society Kalamazoo’s 2017-2018 program season as he focuses on “Those Amazing Birds.”  This illustrated program looks at the amazing diversity and fascinating natural history of North American birds through the eyes of a dedicated bird photographer. We’ll look at the specialized anatomy of birds\, how they care for their young\, and how they survive in extremes like the frozen tundra and blistering desert. The poetic beauty of birds will color the informative narrative about our feathered friends. \nEd Post has been a serious photographer for over 30 years. He specializes in landscape and nature photography\, but also worked as a part-time newspaper and sports photographer for 15 years.  Ed frequently teaches photography classes\, leads photography trips\, and conducts workshops.  He is widely published and he displays his work at local galleries in West Michigan. You can see some of Ed’s images here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/edpost/. \nYou are invited to meet and hear Ed on November 27 at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear entrance of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee mug to reduce dishwashing.
