SUMMARY:California: Desert\, Mountains and Coast Birding Tour
DESCRIPTION:Birding Tour – California\nJoin Bill Sweetman of Bsweet Tours on a birding/natural history tour to one of the most diverse and fascinating states in the entire USA – California. We will visit a wide variety of beautiful habitats on this California Birding Tour as we search for birds and experience California’s diverse flora and fauna. This tour will take us into the Mohave Desert\, the southern most passes of the Sierra Nevada and to the beautiful central Pacific coast where we will visit some wonderfully scenic birding sites. While along the coast we will take a boat from Ventura to Santa Cruz Island National Park (SCI) providing opportunity to find the endemic Island Scrub Jay and possibly sea birds en route. This tour will explore most of the major bird groups\, from sea birds\, ducks and shorebirds\, to hummingbirds and passerines. Our goal is to see all of the California endemic species.\nAn additional note: if winter has provided significant rain\, the wild flower show in many locations is itself worth the trip. \nCost\n• Ground transportation from the point of origin at LAX\, all lodging\, breakfasts beginning on 29 April through 5 May\, picnic lunches\, all admissions and boat trip to Santa Cruz Island National Park.\n• Cost is $1250 per person double occupancy. A deposit of $350 will reserve a spot on the tour.\n• Note: Bill always attempts to keep trip costs as reasonable as possible to appeal to all pocketbooks. Unfortunately\, everything in California is pricey.\n• Lodging will be in Best Westerns and Choice Hotel properties

SUMMARY:Michigan Audubon to lead free bird walks on Wednesdays in May at Capital City Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Bird Walks in May at Capital City Bird Sanctuary at Hawk Valley Farm\nMichigan Audubon’s newest sanctuary is located in Delta Township\, just northwest of downtown Lansing. This suburban oasis provides a wide variety of habitats including open meadow\, shrubland\, and wooded river floodplain. The sanctuary’s riverfront location makes it a prime stopover location for migrating warblers in the spring and fall. \nBlack-throated Green Warbler. Credit: Daniel Behm \nPlease join Michigan Audubon’s Conservation Science Coordinator\, Rachelle Roake\, for free bird walks every Wednesday in May at Capital City Bird Sanctuary at Hawk Valley Farm in Lansing\, Michigan. These walks are a great opportunity to tour the new sanctuary and to learn to identify migrating warblers by both sight and sound. Common species during migration include Yellow-throated Vireo\, Great Crested Flycatcher\, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher\, Northern Parula\, American Redstart\, and Black-throated Green\, Blackburnian\, Magnolia\, Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers. Following the bird walk\, birders have the option to join a short volunteer workday to remove invasive garlic mustard and improve the sanctuary for the birds. Snacks and drinks will be available to workday participants. \nInvasive garlic mustard threatens habitat \nBird walks will depart at 8 am from the Capital City Bird Sanctuary Kiosk across the street from Hawk Meadow Park. Parking is available at Hawk Meadow Park\, 6160 Delta River Dr\, Lansing\, MI 48917 (see map below). The bird walk will last from 8 am–10 am\, with an optional garlic mustard pull from 10 am–12 pm (or as long as you’d like). Trails at the sanctuary are mowed\, but uneven so please wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots. The grass is often dew-covered in the early mornings and the trail is muddy in spots. Ticks\, mosquitoes and poison ivy are present so please dress appropriately. If you would like to help pull garlic mustard\, please bring gardening gloves and hats are recommended. Please email Rachelle at RRoake@michiganaudubon.org to RSVP for the walk and/or the workday. SUMMARY:Stewardship Workdays at Capital City Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Event – Stewardship Workdays at Capital City Bird Sanctuary\nHeld every Wednesday starting June 24 through October 28\, 9 am – 12 pm\n6001 Delta River Drive\, Lansing\, MI\nEvery Wednesday\, Michigan Audubon staff and volunteers gather to remove invasive plants that threaten habitat health at our Lansing sanctuary. Tasks vary by season\, but typically range from hand-pulling weeds to hand-sawing down invasive shrubs. \nThink of these workdays as “extreme gardening” – these are mildly strenuous workdays that involve hiking around the sanctuary and manually removing invasive weeds\, often in challenging locations. A good workout is guaranteed! We do take many snack and water breaks throughout the workday. \nWild raspberries\, poison ivy\, and biting insects are common so please dress appropriately with close-toed boots\, long sleeves\, pants\, and a hat. Insect repellent and sunscreen are recommended\, and we will have extras available. \nIf you are allergic to stinging insects\, please bring an EpiPen and inform the event leader.\nPlease bring gardening or leather gloves if you have them\, but we do have extras on site to borrow. As always\, we will provide water and snacks! \nIf you have questions\, or would like to sign up to attend a workday\, please email Rachelle Roake at RRoake@michiganaudubon.org.

SUMMARY:Cranes\, Color\, and Cabernet Festival
DESCRIPTION:Cranes\, Color\, Cabernet\, and Cider Too\nThe Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary (which is Michigan Audubon’s largest sanctuary) came into being 60 years ago. The anniversary will be commemorated at this year’s Cranes\, Colors\, and Cabernet festival at the sanctuary on Saturday October 17. \nActivities celebrating the Greater Sandhill Crane are hosted by both Jackson Audubon Society (JAS) and Sandhill Crane Vineyards as part of the event in northeast Jackson County. During the festival\, members of JAS will lead driving tours to see the cranes as they forage for food\, and walking tours of the sanctuary trails. The winery will have restaurant specials and provide activities at its location at 4724 Walz Road near Jackson. \nThe event begins at noon when JAS naturalists lead one-hour walking tours of the 1000-plus-acre Haehnle Sanctuary. The last tour will depart at 2:00 p.m. The tour will take participants to the north side of Mud Lake Marsh\, a location rarely visited by humans and a staging area for migrating cranes. \nA lecture on the natural history of the Sandhill Crane will be presented at 4:00 p.m. by a Haehnle naturalist. At 4:30 p.m. participants can take part in the “crane caravan tour.” JAS members will lead this carpool tour to the nearby farm fields\, providing the opportunity to see the cranes at a closer range than at the sanctuary. The carpool will return to Haehnle at approximately 5:30 p.m.\, allowing participants to watch the “fly-in\,” which is when cranes fly directly overhead as they return to the marsh for the evening. Advance notice of your participation in the caravan tour is requested and can be made by contacting the Michigan Audubon office at 517-580-7364. \nViewing of the cranes returning to their roost will occur at the Sanctuary’s observation hill overlooking Mud Lake Marsh until dusk. Haehnle Sanctuary is located directly across the road from 9011 Seymour Road\, northeast of Jackson. \nSchedule: \n12 p.m. – Nature tour with Haehnle naturalist\n\n2 p.m. – Nature tour with Haehnle naturalist \n\n4 p.m. – Celebration of sixty years / Natural History of Sandhill Cranes \n\n4:30 p.m. – Car tour to see Sandhill Cranes feeding in fields \n\n5:30 to\nDark        – Watch cranes coming back to roost in Haehnle Sanctuary at Wing Observation Hill\, Haehnle Sanctuary

SUMMARY:Sandhill Crane Viewing at Baker Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Sandhill Crane Viewing – Baker Sanctuary\nBig Marsh Lake in Baker Sanctuary is the best place to see the cranes at the closest distance. Although the cranes roost on the sanctuary\, viewing takes place from the Battle Creek Kiwanis Club property adjacent to Baker Sanctuary. The Kiwanis property provides the perfect vantage point as it overlooks the shallow\, 200-acre lake. Michigan Audubon is allowed to open the gates to the Kiwanis Youth Area from 4–7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday evenings from October 17 through November 15. The Battle Creek Kiwanis Youth Area is located at 22300 15 Mile Rd.\, northwest of the I-94 and I-69 interchange\, only minutes south of Bellevue.
