SUMMARY:Cranes\, Color\, and Cabernet Festival
DESCRIPTION:Cranes\, Color\, Cabernet\, and Cider Too\nThe Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary (which is Michigan Audubon’s largest sanctuary) came into being 60 years ago. The anniversary will be commemorated at this year’s Cranes\, Colors\, and Cabernet festival at the sanctuary on Saturday October 17. \nActivities celebrating the Greater Sandhill Crane are hosted by both Jackson Audubon Society (JAS) and Sandhill Crane Vineyards as part of the event in northeast Jackson County. During the festival\, members of JAS will lead driving tours to see the cranes as they forage for food\, and walking tours of the sanctuary trails. The winery will have restaurant specials and provide activities at its location at 4724 Walz Road near Jackson. \nThe event begins at noon when JAS naturalists lead one-hour walking tours of the 1000-plus-acre Haehnle Sanctuary. The last tour will depart at 2:00 p.m. The tour will take participants to the north side of Mud Lake Marsh\, a location rarely visited by humans and a staging area for migrating cranes. \nA lecture on the natural history of the Sandhill Crane will be presented at 4:00 p.m. by a Haehnle naturalist. At 4:30 p.m. participants can take part in the “crane caravan tour.” JAS members will lead this carpool tour to the nearby farm fields\, providing the opportunity to see the cranes at a closer range than at the sanctuary. The carpool will return to Haehnle at approximately 5:30 p.m.\, allowing participants to watch the “fly-in\,” which is when cranes fly directly overhead as they return to the marsh for the evening. Advance notice of your participation in the caravan tour is requested and can be made by contacting the Michigan Audubon office at 517-580-7364. \nViewing of the cranes returning to their roost will occur at the Sanctuary’s observation hill overlooking Mud Lake Marsh until dusk. Haehnle Sanctuary is located directly across the road from 9011 Seymour Road\, northeast of Jackson. \nSchedule: \n12 p.m. – Nature tour with Haehnle naturalist\n\n2 p.m. – Nature tour with Haehnle naturalist \n\n4 p.m. – Celebration of sixty years / Natural History of Sandhill Cranes \n\n4:30 p.m. – Car tour to see Sandhill Cranes feeding in fields \n\n5:30 to\nDark        – Watch cranes coming back to roost in Haehnle Sanctuary at Wing Observation Hill\, Haehnle Sanctuary

SUMMARY:Aldo Leopold Festival - 2016
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Aldo Leopold’s Legacy and the New North Huron Birding Trail!\nMay 13-15\, 2016\nThe second annual Aldo Leopold Festival continues the celebration of Aldo Leopold’s legacy in the Les Cheneaux Islands area\, where he spent months roaming the forests and waterways\, further honing his keen appreciation for nature. \nLast year’s festival focused on Aldo’s time in Les Cheneaux\, while we dedicated a new Michigan Historical Marker that commemorates our connection to an American pioneer of conservation. This year’s festival expands our celebration to the birds Leopold loved\, and the conservation ethics he developed that manifested in preserving the many birds that migrate through the Les Cheneaux Islands in the spring. \nThe 2016 Festival has been strategically planned to coincide with the spring migration of songbirds\, so you can enjoy seeing and hearing the dozens of species that fly in– many of whom remain through the spring and summer to nest. \nPlease join us in also celebrating the official opening of the new North Huron Birding Trail\, which has been developed over the past year to showcase the spectacular birding opportunities that can be found along Lake Huron’s north shore! A triathlon\, exploration and hiking\, Dark Sky presentation\, bird and flower hikes\, plant walk\, scavenger hunt\, picnic\, raptor shows\, Drummond Island field trip\, migratory bird talk\, and much more will be offered over the weekend. Most events are free\, but see individual event details for fees. \n \nLearn more by visiting the Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Mackinaw Raptor Fest
DESCRIPTION:Of all bird types\, raptors and waterbirds most excite people and fire the imagination with their wonder\, majesty\, special adaptations\, and abilities. A US Fish and Wildlife Service public survey found that more people travel to see them than any other type of birds. \nMackinaw City\, Michigan\, located at the junction of two peninsulas and two Great Lakes\, creates a unique confluence of migrating birds every spring and fall. The Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch (MSRW)\, a non-profit organization\, was founded in January 2014 primarily to research and educate people about raptors. It is building upon 20 years of owl research and three previous years of hawk counts in this region by independent biologists who largely volunteered their time. \nIn 2016\, MSRW hired eight contractors to conduct research on migrating birds and educate the public. In early April 2016\, it launched the first Mackinaw Raptor Fest\, attended by 120 people. Based on its overwhelming success\, MSRW decided to continue the Fest as a bird-watching and educational opportunity. \nMackinaw Raptor Fest \n* Provides an entertaining and educational showcase to promote public awareness \nand knowledge of raptors and waterbirds and the significance of Mackinaw City and the \nStraits of Mackinac during migration. \n* Promotes positive public attitudes towards raptors and waterbirds and their importance to the environment. \n* Aims to become an internationally renowned annual festival that will generate ongoing ecotourism revenue for the Petoskey/Harbor Springs/Mackinaw City area\, new sponsorship for research on raptors and waterbirds\, and net proceeds to further that research. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:Thornapple Woodpecker Festival
DESCRIPTION:Thornapple Woodpecker Festival\, now in its eighth year\, provides for festival-goers a paved trail along the Thornapple River with birding guides that has an established population of the Redheaded Woodpecker as well as the other more common Eastern woodpeckers.  The trees are short on the south side of the trail so warblers and swallows are easy to see. There are ponds and marsh areas where waterfowl can be found.  A golf cart is provided for those that would rather ride.  Speakers on nature-related topics are available throughout the day\, as well as nature related crafts. The 1922 Trail Depot will be open to show the history of the railroad during the day.  Sponsored by the Grand Rapids Audubon Club. \nFor questions\, please contact Jean Lamoreaux at (616) 293-8666\, or email her at cal3jean@gmail.com. \nFor more information\, visit http://woodpeckerfest.webs.com or find us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Thornapple-Woodpecker-Festival-189561891069751/
