SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Event
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo\nMonday\, February 22: 7:00 PM\nDo you think the American Woodcock is a strange bird? It doesn’t even live in the woods! Or because of its unusually short legs\, its unusually chubby body\, or its unusually long beak\, let’s not even get into its sexual behaviors. Yes\, it is a strange bird. But like many of us\, it does not like cold weather (the woodcocks went south). Maybe that is why Jordyn is available to come and speak to us in February. \nJordyn is the Wildlife Outreach Technician for the DNR. Raised in a small northernMichigan town “where the main street is lined with tractors and there is only one flashing traffic light\,” she is now running the PureMichigan Hunt program and is the communications contact for Southwest Michigan. In February that has her out doing school programs and speaking to Audubon groups about strange birds. \nJoin us\, this bird will warm your hearts\, on Monday\, February 22\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee cup. \nQuestions? Contact: Larry Boutelle\, 269-372-0678

SUMMARY:Grand Rapids Audubon Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Grand Rapids Audubon Club Meeting\nFebruary 29\, 7:00 PM\nThe nation’s electrical system negatively affects birds\, but technologies differ in their impacts. February’s program\, “Birds on the Wire\,” will explore these varying impacts. Speakers Dr. Erik Nordman and Kim Walton will share interesting facts and address common misconceptions about how our electrical grid system affects birds and bats. Dr. Nordman is an associate professor of natural resources management at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). He earned his Masters of Science and Ph.D. from the State University of New York – College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse. He has more than 15 years of experience working with renewable energy systems\, including wind and solar energy for Kenya’s tea industry\, public perceptions of offshore wind energy development and the pest-resistance of biomass crops. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant in 2012 to conduct research on renewable energy and to teach in the Environmental Studies and Energy Engineering departments at Kenyatta University in Nairobi\, Kenya. Kim is the Program Director at GVSU’s Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center. She also teaches classes on sustainability and policy for GVSU. She has a Bachelor of Science in Industrial & Appropriate Technology from Appalachian State University and a Masters in Environmental Analyses and Public Administration from Western Michigan University. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo – “The Great Colorado Chicken Trip”\nMonday\, March 28: 7:30 – 8:30 PM\nYes\, chickens! Chickens are birds\, too! And especially interesting if they are Lesser Prairie- Chickens or Greater Prairie-Chickens or their relatives: Sharp-tailed and Dusky Grouse\, Greater and Gunnison Sage-Grouse\, White-tailed Ptarmigan\, and more. There is no better place in North America to see native grouse and “chicken-like” birds than the state of Colorado – and no better time to find them than in April. This year we are going just four days early\, onMarch 28! \n\nKip Miller is a consummate naturalist\, birder\, and presenter and has been with the Berrien County Parks at Love Creek Nature Center for 34 years. He will take us on an armchair tour of Colorado from the eastern plains to the intermountain parks and mountain ridges to see Lesser and Greater Prairie- Chickens\, Greater and Gunnison Sage-Grouse\, Sharp-tailed and Dusky Grouse\, White-tailed Ptarmigan\, and a few other not-so-chickenish birds. \n\nBesides his work with the Berrien County Parks\, Kip enjoys sharing his enthusiasm for birds by hosting\, organizing\, and guiding birding events and tours – both close to home and in Colorado and other places. You may discover the urge to see more. \n\nPlease come join us at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. SUMMARY:Aldo Leopold Festival - 2016
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Aldo Leopold’s Legacy and the New North Huron Birding Trail!\nMay 13-15\, 2016\nThe second annual Aldo Leopold Festival continues the celebration of Aldo Leopold’s legacy in the Les Cheneaux Islands area\, where he spent months roaming the forests and waterways\, further honing his keen appreciation for nature. \nLast year’s festival focused on Aldo’s time in Les Cheneaux\, while we dedicated a new Michigan Historical Marker that commemorates our connection to an American pioneer of conservation. This year’s festival expands our celebration to the birds Leopold loved\, and the conservation ethics he developed that manifested in preserving the many birds that migrate through the Les Cheneaux Islands in the spring. \nThe 2016 Festival has been strategically planned to coincide with the spring migration of songbirds\, so you can enjoy seeing and hearing the dozens of species that fly in– many of whom remain through the spring and summer to nest. \nPlease join us in also celebrating the official opening of the new North Huron Birding Trail\, which has been developed over the past year to showcase the spectacular birding opportunities that can be found along Lake Huron’s north shore! A triathlon\, exploration and hiking\, Dark Sky presentation\, bird and flower hikes\, plant walk\, scavenger hunt\, picnic\, raptor shows\, Drummond Island field trip\, migratory bird talk\, and much more will be offered over the weekend. Most events are free\, but see individual event details for fees. \n \nLearn more by visiting the Facebook page.

DESCRIPTION:2017 Quiet Water Symposium\nThe Quiet Water Society is pleased to announce the dates for our 22nd Annual Quiet Water Symposium.  We are excited to once again join Michigan State University’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources\, ANR Week Celebration.  In the nearly quarter of a century of promoting non-motorized outdoor recreation\, the Quiet Water Society has never had an easier or more interesting time. \nThose who have not visited this event in the last few years will be amazed at its growth and diversity.  Last year’s Symposium featured over 200 exhibits\, speakers and demonstrations at the MSU Pavilion.   The March 4th event will feature presentations by noted travel writers\, Jim DuFresne\, Kevin Callan\, Hap Wilson and the dean of outdoor writers\, Cliff Jacobson. \nOne of the historic highpoints of the Quiet Water Symposium is celebrating the giving of the Verlen Kruger Award. The recipient of this award receives a commemorative paddle\, and a brick on which the date and the name of the recipient is engraved.
