SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Grand Rapids Audubon Club - Habitat Restoration on Michigan Audubon Sanctuaries
DESCRIPTION:Habitat Restoration and Creation on Michigan Audubon Sanctuaries \nChad Machinski\, Conservation Manager for Michigan Audubon\, will talk with us about his efforts at properties managed by his organization. \nMonday\, APril 27\, 7:30 PM 8:30 PM\nAquinas College Donnelly Conference Center (map)\nGoogle Calendar ICS \nAcross many of Michigan Audubon’s Sanctuaries\, active habitat restoration and creation is an ongoing project. Chad will discuss where this work is going on\, why the work is going on\, and how the work is happening. Chad’s presentation will focus on three Michigan Audubon Sanctuaries as examples of specific work: The Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary\, the Otis Farm Bird Sanctuary\, and the Martha Mott Bird Sanctuary. Attendees will also learn about ways they can get involved with Michigan Audubon work. \nWhile Chad’s first love is botany\, he doesn’t deny the intertwining nature of birds\, plants\, insects\, and all other organisms we share the world with. As Michigan Audubon’s Conservation Manager\, Chad is responsible for the management and care for all 20 of Michigan Audubon’s Sanctuaries around the state and bird specific programs such as Chimney Swift and Purple Martin conservation. In his spare time\, Chad tends to think about many of the same things he does at work: plants\, birds\, and insects. \nThis program is open to the public\, who may attend as guests of the Grand Rapids Audubon Club. Doors of the Donnelly Center open at 7:00pm; come early to meet fellow members\, browse the large selection of library items\, and connect with others about birding. The program begins at 7:30 pm. \n  \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Program - PEOPLE\, PLACES\, BIRDS
DESCRIPTION:APRIL MONTHLY MEETING: “PEOPLE\, PLACES\, BIRDS” \nBy Dave Lemberg and Daniel Bernard \nMonday\, April 27th\, 6:30pm -8:00pm \nPeople’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo \nThis month’s program will showcase Daniel Bernard’s year of birding across America. In 2025\, Daniel Bernard embarked on a birding journey as crazy as it was unique: a quest to travel the entire country and see 100 species of birds in every single lower-48 state\, meet up with local birders all across the country\, and visit birding locales both legendary and unknown. This life-changing journey to explore the “People\, Places\, and Birds” of the American birding world saw Daniel living out of the back of his Subaru Crosstrek and would be filled with hardships and setbacks\, but in the end – after travelling the farthest south\, east\, north\, and west he’d ever been\, birding with over 300 different birders across the country\, and tallying 607 different species ─ Daniel would accomplish his goal of becoming perhaps the first person ever to see 100 species in every lower-48 state in a single year. \nGrowing up the son of an avid birder and naturalist\, Daniel Bernard has held a lifelong enthusiasm for biology and nature\, but the particular passion of birding eluded him for most of his life. After finally caving and accompanying his dad to the Biggest Week in American Birding Festival at Magee Marsh in 2018\, Daniel quickly took to the hobby with an obsessive passion\, and in 2022 set out to do a Michigan “Big Year” during which he recorded 337 species in Michigan. \nWe hope you’ll join us on . This program is geared to all audiences\, and we enthusiastically invite families and nature lovers of any age to join us!  Come at 6:30 PM (new time – half an hour earlier this year) for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. It’s helpful if you bring your own coffee cup. The one-hour program will start at 7:00 PM. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance of the building. \nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be available shortly before the meeting in the May newsletter that is emailed to you. We will also be recording the meeting for later viewing. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Author Visit - James McCommons\, The Feather Wars
DESCRIPTION:COMMUNITY EVENT – Oakland Bird Alliance \nJoin us for a live author event at Clarkston High School on April 9th at 7 pm. \nJames will present his new book\, “The Feather Wars” in an open discussion and will end the event with a chance to get your book signed. \nThe price of the ticket\, $36\, includes (1) copy of James’s new book\, The Feather Wars\, and event admission for (2) people. \nA portion of your ticket purchase will be donated to Oakland Bird Alliance! \nBooks will be available for pick-up at the event or in-store starting March 17th. \nAbout the Author \nJames H. McCommons is a professor emeritus at Northern Michigan University and a veteran journalist\, specializing in ecology\, environmental and travel topics. His writing has appeared in the New York Times\, the Los Angeles Times\, the Minneapolis Star Tribune\, Audubon\, Discover among other publications. He is the author of Waiting on a Train: The Embattled Future of Passenger Rail Service\, and Camera Hunter: George Shiras III and the Birth of Wildlife Photography. \nMore about THE FEATHER WARS \nThe Feather Wars is an entertaining and expansive work of American history\, a story about how disparate characters—progressive politicians\, free-thinking society belles\, nature writers and artists\, bird-loving U.S. presidents\, gunmakers\, business titans\, and brave game wardens—came together to save hundreds of species of birds. Heroes\, martyrs\, villains\, and conflicted do-gooders—the early bird conservation movement had them all. Together they transformed how Americans thought and cared about birds\, forever altering the American landscape. \nFrom the time the country was founded\, early Americans assumed that the land’s natural resources were infinite\, including its birds\, which were zealously hunted for food\, game\, and fashion. With the rapid extinction of the passenger pigeon—a bird once so numerous that its flocks darkened the sky in flight—many realized actions needed to be taken if other birds were to be saved. What followed was both a spiritual awakening and a great crusade to save birds and their habitat. The campaign took place on many battlefields: society teas in Boston\, hunt clubs on the East Coast\, the mangroves in the Everglades\, and in the editorial pages of newspapers and periodicals. From many corners of the country the bird protection movement was born and brought together a remarkable coalition of people and organizations to save America’s birds. \nhttps://www.inscribebooks.com/events \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Grand Rapids Audubon - Monthly Meeting - Great Lakes Piping Plover
DESCRIPTION:The Great Lakes Piping Plover with Sarah Saunders\, National Audubon Society \nMonday\, March 30\, 7:30 – 8:30 PM\nAquinas College Donnelly Conference Center\n157 Woodward Lane SE\, Grand Rapids\, MI\, 49506 \nMonthly membership meetings are FREE and open to the public. \nWe continue our theme of conservation spaces and wildlife by examining another Michigan wildlife recovery success story. The Great Lakes Piping Plover\, a federally endangered shorebird\, has made a remarkable comeback from the brink of extinction thanks to decades of dedicated conservation efforts. Join us on March 30th as Sarah Saunders tells us about the amazing comeback of this favorite Michigan species. Once reduced to just 12 breeding pairs in the 1980s\, this population now exceeds 80 pairs\, with record-breaking breeding seasons in recent years. This success is a testament to the power of science-driven conservation and the collaboration of researchers\, land managers\, and community volunteers on the Great Lakes Piping Plover Conservation Team. In this talk\, Sarah will highlight the key strategies that have fueled this recovery\, including nest monitoring and protection\, predator management\, annual banding\, captive-rearing\, and education and outreach. Sarah will also showcase how long-term banding data have further strengthened these strategies\, contributing to population growth. Despite these gains\, challenges remain\, including increasing threats from climate change and human disturbance. Yet the resilience of the population and the dedication of the Conservation Team offer hope for continued success. The recovery of the Great Lakes Piping Plover serves as an inspiring example of how rigorous science\, partnerships\, and community engagement can drive meaningful conservation outcomes. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo - Birds & Climate Change: An Update on Progress
DESCRIPTION:Program: Birds & Climate Change: An Update on Progress \nAudubon Society of Kalamazoo \nMonday\, February 23\, 2026\, 6:30pm \nPeople’s Church\, 1758 10th Street N\, Kalamazoo\, MI 49009\nThe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that humanity has only four years to cut global greenhouse gas emissions nearly in half\, and the consequences of failure are dire – for us and for the natural world. Birds are already feeling the heat\, and examples will be shared. Anyone who’s done a Christmas Bird Count or submitted to eBird has helped document climate-related changes in bird distribution\, migration\, and nesting. Climate initiatives from Audubon include National’s award-winning climate action guide and webpage\, and many local chapter efforts. Good news is that quite a few proven climate solutions are available\, already having an impact. But they need to be implemented\, and everyone can help with that. We can make a difference for ourselves\, the birds we love\, and our irreplaceable living planet. \nOur speaker and ASK Board member\, Dr. Susan Schneider\, has served on the boards of four Audubon chapters and been president of two. Her years of experience in climate change work include outreach\, community projects\, organizing\, academic and nonacademic publications\, and extensive public speaking. As Senior Scientist for the sustainability nonprofit Root Solutions\, Schneider helped design projects\, and coauthored two chapters in the organization’s guidebook\, Making Shift Happen: Designing for Successful Environmental Behavior Change. Recent outreach includes a podcast for the Union of Concerned Scientists and a monthly “green psychology” blog. Schneider’s award-winning book for the public\, The Science of Consequences\, covers basic learning principles and their broad range of applications\, including sustainability. Schneider is on the faculty at Western Michigan University and serves on its Climate Change Working Group. She also serves on the Tools of Change Landmark Peer Review Panel for Climate Change\, a psychology for sustainability board\, and the board of the nonprofit Green Driving America.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: How to Attract Michigan Bluebirds
DESCRIPTION:Penny Briscoe will provide an educational and entertaining presentation about Eastern Bluebirds with lots of photos of Michigan bluebirds\, as well as Mountain and Western Bluebirds that we do not get to see in Michigan. The presentation will include details about nest boxes\, nest predators\, and about bluebirds themselves and includes some fun video clips. Earlier this year\, the Michigan Songbird Coalition awarded ASK eight complete bluebird house systems in recognition of the positive work we have done in promoting and protecting birds. We knew that Penny was the right person to contact to get those boxes put together\, erected\, and monitored! (A big thank you to Penny’s husband\, Rick\, for the help to put the boxes together.) Penny will update us on the installation of the bluebird houses. Penny will also bring along a couple of bluebird houses of different styles and talk about predator guards and why they are important. \nPenny Briscoe has been interested in nestbox songbirds for many years and is the Michigan Bluebird Society county coordinator for St. Joseph and Branch counties. While best known as an active and passionate Purple Martin landlord\, Penny has hosted Eastern Bluebirds on her property for many years and views caring for them as a serious and important part of her contribution to nature. Never does a year go by without having the joy of several successful bluebird nests in her boxes. \nIn order to participate in and learn from a formal environmental education setting\, Penny has\, for several years been a part of the Michigan Master Naturalist program offered through the Michigan State University Extension service. However\, most of her knowledge about birds has been through self-study and years of experience\, experimentation\, and travel. Her birding trips have taken her to the Amazon region (Manaus\, Brazil)\, Costa Rica\, Arizona\, Colorado\, and the western United States\, the East Coast\, and South Africa. Other more local locations include interesting and valuable experiences in the Midwest\, such as along the Mississippi Backwaters south of Minneapolis\, Magee Marsh in Ohio\, and many locations in Michigan. In her travels\, however\, Penny has not found a bird that she loves more than the Eastern Bluebird or the Purple Martin. \nAmong Penny’s varied career history\, she is most proud of her experiences as a high school English and business teacher for 31 years at Lawton Community Schools and Gull Lake Community Schools. It is these teaching experiences that have prepared her for a retirement that focuses on teaching others about the importance of our winged friends and their contributions to the greater good of the world. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, November 24th\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. This link will be available shortly before the meeting in the November newsletter and on the event page. We will also be recording the meeting for later viewing. \n  \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:Swifts Nights Are Back! Celebrate Urban Wildlife at Smith Floral in Lansing!
DESCRIPTION:May 5 – 11\nCome celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) with Michigan Audubon with a week of Swifts Night Out events\, May 5 – 11. \nThe theme of this year’s WMBD is Shared Spaces – Creating Bird-friendly Cities and Communities\, and what better bird to celebrate than the Chimney Swift\, a bird now intertwined with human habitation. \n“Swifts Nights Out\, hosted by Michigan Audubon and supported by its Capital Area chapter\, are happening each night from May 5–11\, 8:00–9:30 p.m.\, at the beautiful Smith Floral & Greenhouses\, located at 1124 E. Mt. Hope Ave.\, Lansing\, MI 48910. \nThis free\, family-friendly event is your chance to witness one of nature’s most mesmerizing sky shows: hundreds of Chimney Swifts swirling in a tornado-like formation before swooping into their evening roost. It’s a magical\, urban wildlife spectacle you won’t want to miss! Please bring a chair if you would like to sit while watching. \nArrive early to chat with fellow bird lovers and ask Michigan Audubon’s Conservation Manager\, Chad Machinski\, M.S.\, all your swift-related questions—he’ll be on hand to share his knowledge and enthusiasm! \nOf course\, in true birdwatching fashion\, we wait with bated breath each evening—because swifts are wild creatures\, and they don’t always RSVP. But that just makes the moment they do appear even more thrilling! \nThese incredible birds have faced steep population declines due to habitat loss\, insecticide use\, and climate change. At the event\, you’ll also learn how you can help protect them through conservation and citizen science efforts. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Manager Chad Machinski\, M.S.\, at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7564. \nYou can learn more about World Migratory Bird Day at https://www.migratorybirdday.org/. \n  \n
