SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Program - PEOPLE\, PLACES\, BIRDS
DESCRIPTION:APRIL MONTHLY MEETING: “PEOPLE\, PLACES\, BIRDS” \nBy Dave Lemberg and Daniel Bernard \nMonday\, April 27th\, 6:30pm -8:00pm \nPeople’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo \nThis month’s program will showcase Daniel Bernard’s year of birding across America. In 2025\, Daniel Bernard embarked on a birding journey as crazy as it was unique: a quest to travel the entire country and see 100 species of birds in every single lower-48 state\, meet up with local birders all across the country\, and visit birding locales both legendary and unknown. This life-changing journey to explore the “People\, Places\, and Birds” of the American birding world saw Daniel living out of the back of his Subaru Crosstrek and would be filled with hardships and setbacks\, but in the end – after travelling the farthest south\, east\, north\, and west he’d ever been\, birding with over 300 different birders across the country\, and tallying 607 different species ─ Daniel would accomplish his goal of becoming perhaps the first person ever to see 100 species in every lower-48 state in a single year. \nGrowing up the son of an avid birder and naturalist\, Daniel Bernard has held a lifelong enthusiasm for biology and nature\, but the particular passion of birding eluded him for most of his life. After finally caving and accompanying his dad to the Biggest Week in American Birding Festival at Magee Marsh in 2018\, Daniel quickly took to the hobby with an obsessive passion\, and in 2022 set out to do a Michigan “Big Year” during which he recorded 337 species in Michigan. \nWe hope you’ll join us on . This program is geared to all audiences\, and we enthusiastically invite families and nature lovers of any age to join us!  Come at 6:30 PM (new time – half an hour earlier this year) for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. It’s helpful if you bring your own coffee cup. The one-hour program will start at 7:00 PM. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance of the building. \nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be available shortly before the meeting in the May newsletter that is emailed to you. We will also be recording the meeting for later viewing. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Grand Rapids Audubon Club - Habitat Restoration on Michigan Audubon Sanctuaries
DESCRIPTION:Habitat Restoration and Creation on Michigan Audubon Sanctuaries \nChad Machinski\, Conservation Manager for Michigan Audubon\, will talk with us about his efforts at properties managed by his organization. \nMonday\, APril 27\, 7:30 PM 8:30 PM\nAquinas College Donnelly Conference Center (map)\nGoogle Calendar ICS \nAcross many of Michigan Audubon’s Sanctuaries\, active habitat restoration and creation is an ongoing project. Chad will discuss where this work is going on\, why the work is going on\, and how the work is happening. Chad’s presentation will focus on three Michigan Audubon Sanctuaries as examples of specific work: The Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary\, the Otis Farm Bird Sanctuary\, and the Martha Mott Bird Sanctuary. Attendees will also learn about ways they can get involved with Michigan Audubon work. \nWhile Chad’s first love is botany\, he doesn’t deny the intertwining nature of birds\, plants\, insects\, and all other organisms we share the world with. As Michigan Audubon’s Conservation Manager\, Chad is responsible for the management and care for all 20 of Michigan Audubon’s Sanctuaries around the state and bird specific programs such as Chimney Swift and Purple Martin conservation. In his spare time\, Chad tends to think about many of the same things he does at work: plants\, birds\, and insects. \nThis program is open to the public\, who may attend as guests of the Grand Rapids Audubon Club. Doors of the Donnelly Center open at 7:00pm; come early to meet fellow members\, browse the large selection of library items\, and connect with others about birding. The program begins at 7:30 pm. \n  \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:Swift Night Out
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) with Michigan Audubon May 4 – 9 with a week of Swift Night Out evenings. \nThe theme of this year’s WMBD is “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter” highlighting the role of public participation in bird conservation. Chimney Swift success is now intertwined with human habitation and is one of the focal species for Michigan Audubon community science reporting. Roosts from all over Michigan are monitored and reported to learn about the changing populations of these amazing aerial insectivores. \nSwift Night Out\, hosted by Michigan Audubon\, will be held each night from May 4–9\, 8:00–9:30 p.m.\, at Smith Floral & Greenhouses\, located at 1124 E. Mt. Hope Ave.\, Lansing\, MI 48910. \n*POSSIBLE ALTERNATE ROUTE DUE TO CONSTRUCTION – Mt. Hope will be closed near the location\, please use the posted detours. Please access the parking lot from Alpha St. from the South and West\, and using Shubel road from the North and East. \nThis free\, family-friendly event is your chance to witness one of nature’s most mesmerizing sky shows: hundreds of Chimney Swifts swirling in a tornado-like formation before swooping into their evening roost. It’s a magical\, urban wildlife spectacle you won’t want to miss! Please bring a chair if you would like to sit while watching. \nArrive early to chat with fellow bird lovers and ask Michigan Audubon Staff all your swift-related questions—they will be on hand to share their knowledge and enthusiasm! \nOf course\, in true birdwatching fashion\, we wait with bated breath each evening for their sunset arrival — because swifts are wild creatures\, they don’t always RSVP. That just makes the moment they do appear even more thrilling! \nThese incredible birds have faced steep population declines due to habitat loss\, insecticide use\, and climate change. At the event\, you’ll also learn how you can help protect them through conservation and community science efforts. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Manager Chad Machinski\, M.S.\, at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7564 or Kristy Taylor Events & Outreach Manager at ktaylor@michiganaudubon.org . \nYou can learn more about World Migratory Bird Day at https://www.migratorybirdday.org/.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Petoskey Regional Audubon - Saturday Morning Birding Walks
DESCRIPTION:The Petoskey Regional Audubon Society invites you to birding walks at Little Traverse Conservancy’s Waldron Fen Preserve on Saturday mornings during the month of May at 8am. \nSpot migratory and resident bird species on this hike throughout a variety of habitats led by trip leader Brooke Knickerbocker – an enthusiastic birder and high school student. This preserve has nearly 2 miles of trails\, two small ponds\, a viewing platform\, and is a sizable wetland-fen complex. Expect this walk to take two to three hours. \nWe will meet in the dirt parking lot next to the Waldron Fen Nature Preserve sign off Banwell Road (look for the LTC sign). The parking area is unpaved and offers no restroom facilities. Bug spray is strongly encouraged. Trails can be muddy. Proper footwear is a must. The trail is a loop and there is no short-cut back. \nThe Fen truly is a magical spot with 148 acres. For example\, on one morning in May 2025 our small group called 51 species and 137 individual birds. The terrain is uneven\, sometimes wet\, and bug spray is always recommended. As you can imagine\, birds love this kind of habitat; but it’s not for everyone. \n  \nNotes:  \n\nRSVP is not necessary to attend the bird walk. Just show up.\nBring binoculars if you have them. If not\, loaner pairs will be available.\nBeginning birders always welcome.\nNo pets. No smoking.\nDress for conditions and insect protection.\nDirections – From Alanson\, head east on M-68 to Banwell Road. Turn right. Continue on Banwell 3.3 miles to entrance on left.\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Roscommon Bird City - World Migratory Bird Day Event
DESCRIPTION:World Migratory Bird Day 2026: Every Bird Counts—Your Observations Matter\n\nSaturday\, May 09\, 2026\, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM \nRoscommon\, 585 Southline\, Roscommon\, MI 48653\, USA \n\n\nJoin us as we highlight the role of public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations and their habitats\, and factors that impact their populations and contribute to our knowledge about how to protect them. \n\nAbout the event\n\n\n\nJoin us at Gahagan Nature Preserve on Saturday May 9 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD). The theme for this year’s WMBD\, “Every Bird Counts—Your Observations Matter”\, highlights the role of public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations and their habitats and factors that impact their populations and contribute to our knowledge about how to protect them. Community science\, ranging from backyard bird counts to large-scale coordinated surveys\, provides information on species distribution\, abundance trends\, migration timing\, and breeding success. This data is important to identify conservation priorities and inform effective conservation action plans and strategies. By engaging individuals and communities in monitoring efforts\, we not only gather scientific data but also build a deeper connection to nature\, raise awareness about the challenges migratory birds face\, and inspire direct conservation action. \nWe will talk about ongoing citizen science projects\, eBird\, and Merlin\, then hit the trails at Gahagan to use some of what we learned. \n\n\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Petoskey Regional Audubon Society - Beginner Birding along the Bear River
DESCRIPTION:Join Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council staff and the Petoskey Regional Audubon Society members for two guided birding walks along the Bear River this spring. Supported by the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation’s Little Traverse Bay Restoration Fund\, these events are part of a broader effort to connect people with the Bear River corridor and support ongoing restoration work through the Healing the Bear Initiative. \nWhether you’re brand new to birding or have years of experience\, all are welcome to join us in slowing down\, observing\, and appreciating the birds and habitats that make this ecosystem unique. Early May is an ideal time for birding. Brightly colored male birds are singing to attract a mate and establish a territory. The leaves on the trees are just opening up so it is easier to see the birds. \nThe Beginner Birding Walk on May 11 will provide tips and recommendations for those just getting into bird watching\, followed by a walk along the Bear River to see and hear birds. It will take place 8:30am to 10:10am. We will meet at the Bear River Picnic Shelter. Parking is available on Quaintance Ave\, Petoskey.  The walk is free\, but please RSVP by clicking here. \n  \nEvent Details:  \n\nWear Outdoor clothing (dress for the weather)\nWear Sturdy shoes\nBring Reusable water bottle and/or coffee mug\nBring Insect Repellent\nNo pets or smoking.\nBring your Binoculars (a limited number will be available to borrow)\nRestrooms are available at the parking area\n\nWe’re grateful to Bearcub Outfitters for supporting our Bear River Birding events! Participants will receive a coupon for 15% off binoculars\, a great opportunity for first-time birders or anyone looking to upgrade their gear! \nCome explore the Bear River with us and discover how birds can offer new perspectives on the health and beauty of this important watershed. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Grand Rapids Audubon Club - May Birdy Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Grand Rapids Audubon Club’s Birdy Book Club\, hosted at Books & Mortar\, a locally owned\, independent book store. \nMonday\, May 11\, 2026\, 6:00-7:00 pm\, we’ll discuss “Birding Without Borders\,” by Noah Strycker \nBooks & Mortar: 966 Cherry St. SE\, Grand Rapids\, MI \nAbout the book:\nIn 2015\, Noah set himself a lofty goal: to become the first person to see half the planet’s birds in one year. For 365 days\, with a backpack\, binoculars and a series of one-way tickets\, he traveled across 41 countries and all seven continents\, eventually spotting 6\,042 species — by far the biggest birding year on record. \nThis is no travelogue or glorified checklist. Noah ventures deep into a world of blood-sucking leeches\, chronic sleep deprivation\, airline snafus\, breakdowns\, mudslides\, floods\, war zones\, ecologic devastation\, conservation triumphs\, common and iconic species\, and scores of passionate bird lovers around the globe. By pursuing the freest creatures on the planet\, he gains a unique perspective on the world they share with us — and offers a hopeful message that even as many birds face an uncertain future\, more people than ever are working to protect them. \n————————————————— \nAbout the club: \n\nBuy or borrow the book and complete the reading before the meeting. Get 10% off the price of the book if you purchase at Books & Mortar (mention it’s for the GRAC Birdy Book Club!)\nThere’s no cost to participate (apart from any books you opt to purchase). And you don’t need to be a club member\, or a birder\, to join us for the discussion! We love meeting new people\nBook club meets 6 to 7 p.m. generally on the second Monday of every other month (January\, March\, May\, July\, September\, November) except in the case of scheduling conflicts.\nTitles for the 2026 book club schedule (and past picks) are available on our website: https://www.graud.org/membershipmeetings-1\nThis is a space for mutually respectful\, curious and sometimes challenging conversations. Happy reading!\n\n  \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event.
The parking area is unpaved and offers no restroom facilities. Bug spray is strongly encouraged. Trails can be muddy. Proper footwear is a must.
