SUMMARY:Swift Night Out - Spring Arbor
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a Swift Night Out with Michigan Audubon and the Jackson Audubon Society on August 25th and celebrate urban wildlife at Spring Arbor University by watching Chimney Swifts come in to roost. \nThis free\, family-friendly event features an amazing spectacle at dusk\, when hundreds of Chimney Swifts flock together in a tornado-like formation\, flying in increasingly tighter circles before dropping into the chimney where they roost for the night. \nThese urban birds have suffered a steep population decline in recent decades due to loss of habitat\, insecticide use\, climate change\, and more. Information on how you can help this species\, including citizen science projects\, will be available at the event. \nThe event begins at 7:30 p.m. for social time with most Chimney Swift activity starting just before sunset and continuing through dusk. Please meet us on Spring Arbor’s campus between Ormston Hall and White Auditorium along Cottage St. across from The Arbor Church. Parking is available along Cottage St. and surrounding parking lots. For directions\, please use 120 E Main St. Spring Arbor\, MI 49283 as your destination\, but note that this address takes you directly to The Arbor Church. Parking can be found along Cottage St. west of The Arbor Church and in the parking lot north of The Arbor Church. Please see attached map for locations of buildings and meeting location. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Manager Chad Machinski at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7564. \nSpring Arbor Swift Night Out Map

SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — Birdman of the Senate: Senator George P. McLean and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act
DESCRIPTION:The Audubon Society of Kalamazoo’s 2024–2025 program series will commence on September 23 with some avian literature. Michigan author and historian\, Will McLean Greeley will present an overview of his book\, A Connecticut Yankee Goes to Washington: Senator George P. McLean\, Birdman of the Senate. The book is the story of how Connecticut’s George P. McLean helped establish lasting legal protections for birds\, overseeing passage of the 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act\, landmark environmental protection legislation that is still in effect today. Greeley\, McLean’s great-great nephew\, puts McLean’s victory for birds in the context of his distinguished 45-year career marked by many acts of reform during a time of widespread corruption and political instability. \nWill McLean Greeley\, a resident of Midland\, Michigan\, grew up in Kalamazoo with a passion for American history\, politics\, and birds. A graduate of Loy Norrix High School\, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Michigan and then a master’s degree from Michigan in archives administration. After retiring from a 35-year career in government and corporate market research\, he embarked upon a three-year research and writing journey to learn about his great-great uncle George P. McLean and his legacy. A Connecticut Yankee Goes to Washington is his first book. \nI have just finished Mr. Greeley’s book myself and can say his biography of Senator McLean is inspiring in terms of what one person could do in the cause of bird conservation and the impact of his efforts 100 years ago in the Progressive Era. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, September 23rd\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. This program is geared to all audiences\, and we enthusiastically invite families and nature lovers of any age to join us! Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance of the building. \nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be emailed shortly to all members before the meeting. We will also be recording the meeting for later viewing. \n~ Dave Lemberg\, Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Programs Chair

SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — The Effect of Global Change on Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Why are we (Audubon Society of Kalamazoo) having a presentation on butterflies? Granted – they have wings\, they fly\, you can look at them through binoculars\, and many of them are colorful. But\, what does that have to do with birds? To us\, butterflies are usually welcome visitors to our flowerbeds and fun to watch. To a bird\, they are food factories. Birds rely on the caterpillars of butterfly and moth species as a major food source. Many birds will also consume the flying adult stages of butterflies. Even seed-eating and fruit-eating birds rely on nutritious protein-filled caterpillars for their nestlings. Without that food source\, the youngsters will not survive. Environmental effects on butterflies\, therefore\, have an effect on birds. Unfortunately\, many butterflies and various other groups of insects are in steep decline. This decline is occurring across ecosystems worldwide and may have grave future implications for species that depend on them – including humans. \nOur October speaker\, Stephanie Clark\, is a fifth-year graduate student at Michigan State University / Kellogg Biological Station and is studying the effects of various factors\, such as drought\, insecticides\, and temperature\, on butterflies. Her primary species of study has been the Cabbage White (Pieris rapae) which she fell in love with after working in an insect lab after college. She works with the butterflies both in the field and in controlled laboratory settings. Stephanie has also studied how ant communities in farming plots with and without pesticides are impacted by the presence of native Michigan prairie plants. Please come and hear about this important topic and find out how you can support insect diversity in your local ecosystem. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, October 28\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance. \nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be available shortly before the meeting in the November newsletter emailed to members and on our calendar of events webpage. We will also be recording the meeting for later viewing as well. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — Bird on the Move: Looking to the Past to Secure the Future of the Kirtland's Warbler
DESCRIPTION:On November 25\, Dr. Steve Roels will be presenting on what could be argued is truly a “State Bird” of Michigan\, the Kirtland’s Warbler. The Kirtland’s Warbler is a Great Lakes endemic species that summers and breeds in young jack pine forests\, primarily in Michigan’s Northern Lower Peninsula. It winters in scrub forests in the Bahamas. This species was nearly lost to extinction due to fire suppression in its very limited breeding habitat and nest parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds. \nThe removal of the Kirtland’s Warbler from the Federal endangered species list as a result of sustained conservation efforts is a victory for the bird and its champions. Yet threats to the species’ future\, including climate change and human development\, persist. Examining the deep history of Kirtland’s Warbler and its instinctive behaviors offers hope that the bird\, despite its fussy reputation\, can adapt to a changing planet. Unprecedented research projects are revealing how the warbler’s movement ecology has enabled its survival across millennia and what we must do to support the warbler as it navigates the new millennium. \nDr. Steve Roels is a conservation biologist with American Bird Conservancy\, currently serving as the Kirtland’s Warbler Program Director and Conservation Team Coordinator. He earned his MA from the University of Kansas in 2011\, studying population restoration of a rare prairie plant. He earned his PhD from Michigan State University in 2018\, studying bird ecology in tropical forest restorations. He has conducted field research in Michigan\, Kansas\, Texas\, Colorado\, Vietnam\, and Panama. His scientific work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Avian Conservation and Ecology; Restoration Ecology; and Agriculture\, Ecosystems\, and Environment. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, November 25\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — Michigan Motus Array: Exciting Detections in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, Rich and Brenda Keith attended the annual meeting of Eastern Bird Banders in West Virginia. Stu MacKenzie from Bird Studies Canada spoke on the Motus Project that was launched in 2014. In Stu’s presentation he showed slides of Gray-cheeked Thrush banded in traditional and shade grown coffee plantations being detected at Motus stations going north\, until they reached Michigan. Stu’s observation “we need Motus stations in Michigan” was taken as a command by Rich. The Michigan Motus Array presently has 20 stations with 8 more funded and going up in 2025 plus more in the works. Rich and Brenda will speak to their experiences and findings since joining the Motus Project. \nLongtime Audubon Society of Kalamazoo members Rich and Brenda Keith began working with the research program at the Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC) as volunteers in the mid-1980s. Both were eventually hired by the KNC in the bird banding program. That program expanded to include the Keiths’ 43-acre property near Vicksburg\, Michigan\, now known as the Pitsfield Banding Station. That site as well as the KNC and Fort Custer Training Center are part of the Kalamazoo Valley Bird Observatory under Rich’s direction. In addition to banding birds\, Rich and Brenda have also contributed to a variety of bird-related research projects\, the Michigan Breeding Bird Atlas\, winter feeder surveys\, and Christmas Bird Counts. Both are certified hummingbird banders\, a designation achieved by very few in Michigan. In 2018\, they began work on the Motus Tower project across lower and upper Michigan. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, March 24\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. It’s helpful if you bring your own coffee cup. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance.\nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be available shortly before the meeting in the April newsletter and on our event calendar – https://kalamazooaudubon.org/calendar/. We will also be recording it for later viewing. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:Swifts Nights Are Back! Celebrate Urban Wildlife at Smith Floral in Lansing!
DESCRIPTION:May 5 – 11\nCome celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) with Michigan Audubon with a week of Swifts Night Out events\, May 5 – 11. \nThe theme of this year’s WMBD is Shared Spaces – Creating Bird-friendly Cities and Communities\, and what better bird to celebrate than the Chimney Swift\, a bird now intertwined with human habitation. \n“Swifts Nights Out\, hosted by Michigan Audubon and supported by its Capital Area chapter\, are happening each night from May 5–11\, 8:00–9:30 p.m.\, at the beautiful Smith Floral & Greenhouses\, located at 1124 E. Mt. Hope Ave.\, Lansing\, MI 48910. \nThis free\, family-friendly event is your chance to witness one of nature’s most mesmerizing sky shows: hundreds of Chimney Swifts swirling in a tornado-like formation before swooping into their evening roost. It’s a magical\, urban wildlife spectacle you won’t want to miss! Please bring a chair if you would like to sit while watching. \nArrive early to chat with fellow bird lovers and ask Michigan Audubon’s Conservation Manager\, Chad Machinski\, M.S.\, all your swift-related questions—he’ll be on hand to share his knowledge and enthusiasm! \nOf course\, in true birdwatching fashion\, we wait with bated breath each evening—because swifts are wild creatures\, and they don’t always RSVP. But that just makes the moment they do appear even more thrilling! \nThese incredible birds have faced steep population declines due to habitat loss\, insecticide use\, and climate change. At the event\, you’ll also learn how you can help protect them through conservation and citizen science efforts. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Manager Chad Machinski\, M.S.\, at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7564. \nYou can learn more about World Migratory Bird Day at https://www.migratorybirdday.org/. \n  \n

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: How to Attract Michigan Bluebirds
DESCRIPTION:Penny Briscoe will provide an educational and entertaining presentation about Eastern Bluebirds with lots of photos of Michigan bluebirds\, as well as Mountain and Western Bluebirds that we do not get to see in Michigan. The presentation will include details about nest boxes\, nest predators\, and about bluebirds themselves and includes some fun video clips. Earlier this year\, the Michigan Songbird Coalition awarded ASK eight complete bluebird house systems in recognition of the positive work we have done in promoting and protecting birds. We knew that Penny was the right person to contact to get those boxes put together\, erected\, and monitored! (A big thank you to Penny’s husband\, Rick\, for the help to put the boxes together.) Penny will update us on the installation of the bluebird houses. Penny will also bring along a couple of bluebird houses of different styles and talk about predator guards and why they are important. \nPenny Briscoe has been interested in nestbox songbirds for many years and is the Michigan Bluebird Society county coordinator for St. Joseph and Branch counties. While best known as an active and passionate Purple Martin landlord\, Penny has hosted Eastern Bluebirds on her property for many years and views caring for them as a serious and important part of her contribution to nature. Never does a year go by without having the joy of several successful bluebird nests in her boxes. \nIn order to participate in and learn from a formal environmental education setting\, Penny has\, for several years been a part of the Michigan Master Naturalist program offered through the Michigan State University Extension service. However\, most of her knowledge about birds has been through self-study and years of experience\, experimentation\, and travel. Her birding trips have taken her to the Amazon region (Manaus\, Brazil)\, Costa Rica\, Arizona\, Colorado\, and the western United States\, the East Coast\, and South Africa. Other more local locations include interesting and valuable experiences in the Midwest\, such as along the Mississippi Backwaters south of Minneapolis\, Magee Marsh in Ohio\, and many locations in Michigan. In her travels\, however\, Penny has not found a bird that she loves more than the Eastern Bluebird or the Purple Martin. \nAmong Penny’s varied career history\, she is most proud of her experiences as a high school English and business teacher for 31 years at Lawton Community Schools and Gull Lake Community Schools. It is these teaching experiences that have prepared her for a retirement that focuses on teaching others about the importance of our winged friends and their contributions to the greater good of the world. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, November 24th\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. This program is geared to all audiences\, and we enthusiastically invite families and nature lovers of any age to join us! Come at 6:30 PM (new time – half an hour earlier this year) for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. It’s helpful if you bring your own coffee cup. The one-hour program will start at 7:00 PM. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance of the building. \nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be available shortly before the meeting in the November newsletter and on the event page. We will also be recording the meeting for later viewing. \n  \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo - Birds & Climate Change: An Update on Progress
DESCRIPTION:Program: Birds & Climate Change: An Update on Progress \nAudubon Society of Kalamazoo \nMonday\, February 23\, 2026\, 6:30pm \nPeople’s Church\, 1758 10th Street N\, Kalamazoo\, MI 49009\nThe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that humanity has only four years to cut global greenhouse gas emissions nearly in half\, and the consequences of failure are dire – for us and for the natural world. Birds are already feeling the heat\, and examples will be shared. Anyone who’s done a Christmas Bird Count or submitted to eBird has helped document climate-related changes in bird distribution\, migration\, and nesting. Climate initiatives from Audubon include National’s award-winning climate action guide and webpage\, and many local chapter efforts. Good news is that quite a few proven climate solutions are available\, already having an impact. But they need to be implemented\, and everyone can help with that. We can make a difference for ourselves\, the birds we love\, and our irreplaceable living planet. \nOur speaker and ASK Board member\, Dr. Susan Schneider\, has served on the boards of four Audubon chapters and been president of two. Her years of experience in climate change work include outreach\, community projects\, organizing\, academic and nonacademic publications\, and extensive public speaking. As Senior Scientist for the sustainability nonprofit Root Solutions\, Schneider helped design projects\, and coauthored two chapters in the organization’s guidebook\, Making Shift Happen: Designing for Successful Environmental Behavior Change. Recent outreach includes a podcast for the Union of Concerned Scientists and a monthly “green psychology” blog. Schneider’s award-winning book for the public\, The Science of Consequences\, covers basic learning principles and their broad range of applications\, including sustainability. Schneider is on the faculty at Western Michigan University and serves on its Climate Change Working Group. She also serves on the Tools of Change Landmark Peer Review Panel for Climate Change\, a psychology for sustainability board\, and the board of the nonprofit Green Driving America.
