SUMMARY:Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop 2018 - Native Design for the Birds
DESCRIPTION:Join Michigan Audubon and Wesley Landon of Native Edge for an all-day workshop focused on the critical relationship between birds and native plants\, all through the lens of intentional garden design. In this workshop\, participants will learn why birds need native plants\, which native plants are “powerhouses” for birds\, and how to use native plants in both formal and informal landscapes. A common concern when adding native plants to the landscape is their “weedy” or “messy” look – this year’s workshop is focused on bucking this misconception by teaching participants how to select native plants to fit a desired design aesthetic and still support birds\, pollinators\, and wildlife. Wesley Landon is a licensed landscape architect focused on creating resilient\, innovative places which inspire and restore the native environmental fabric of the landscape. He will be sharing his knowledge through an interactive exercise and discussion on site selection and formal design using native plants. Participants should bring aerial images\, sketches of a future garden project\, and/or knowledge about specific site conditions to discuss during the exercise. \nThis workshop will feature an indoor educational session followed by an outdoor walk to view good examples of a bird-friendly landscape. In the afternoon\, the group will travel to Wildtype in Mason\, where owner Bill Schneider will give a tour of this unique native plant nursery and participants will have the opportunity to shop and explore during one of the few days this great resource is open to the public. Participants will take home a resource folder packed with helpful tips and a native shrub to kick-start a backyard habitat transformation. A buffet lunch is included with registration along with a packet of take-home resources. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors as this event will take place rain or shine. \nIf you love watching birds\, please join us to learn how you can support our birds by stewarding healthy native habitat around your home\, office\, school\, or neighborhood. \nCost: $25 for Michigan Audubon or Woldumar Nature Center members; $35 for non-members of either organization \n[vc_button url=”https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2018-backyard-bird-habitat-workshop-tickets-45248807401″ text=”>> Click here to register for the Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop” size=”” align=”left” type=”midnight” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]

SUMMARY:Seminar Series: The Art of Birding "by Ear" with Jim McGrath
DESCRIPTION:Studying field guides is valuable for identifying wild birds around you\, but what about the ones that you can’t see? When you gain the ability to “bird by ear\,” you propel yourself to a level of avian awareness that blows away identification by sight alone. Join Nature Discovery’s Jim McGrath for this visually and auditorially-stimulating presentation. Jim will introduce participants to word handles and other tips to help you recognize and remember a host of common birdsongs. At the presentation’s conclusion\, weather permitting\, participants are invited to step outside and begin to put their newly-gained skills to work. Don’t forget your binoculars! Don’t have binoculars? No worries! We’ll have extras on hand. \nThis event is part of the Michigan Audubon Seminar Series. Seminars are free and open to the public. Sessions take place on the second Monday of each month from 7 – 8 p.m. at the Michigan Audubon office located at 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos MI\, 48864.

SUMMARY:CANCELED — COMMUNITY: Tawas Point Migration 2020
DESCRIPTION:In response to COVID-19\, this event has been canceled. \nA Birding Adventure from AuSable Valley Audubon: The 15th Spring birding event at Tawas Point in Iosco County \nTawas Point on the shore of Lake Huron is a natural birding hotspot in the Spring as migrating birds follow the shoreline to their summer nesting habitats. Songbirds\, shorebirds\, and raptors all may be seen at this location and throughout Iosco County at forest\, wetland\, and lake sites during May. \nSince 2006\, AuSable Valley Audubon\, a chapter of Michigan Audubon\, has hosted an event to both educate and celebrate with local government\, businesses\, and interested nature enthusiasts the impact and importance of bird migration in this area. The program has attracted growing participation from throughout Michigan and a broader\, even international\, area. \nThe Tawas Point Migration 2020 program offers a combination of high-quality guided birding opportunities for small groups coupled with indoor educational sessions designed for birders of all ages. \n\nField trips include trails at Tawas Point State Park and car-pool/bus destinations in Iosco County. Participants can expect to see Whip-poor-wills\, Red-headed Woodpeckers\, Trumpeter Swans\, migrating warblers\, and our featured Scarlet Tanagers. Some field trips focus on the unique Kirtland’s Warbler habitat.\n\n\nThe educational program includes hands-on nature activities for kids as well as two new hour-long live birds of prey shows. Other sessions include Monarch Butterfly raising\, Trumpeter Swans\, and Eagle Research.\nFood Service offers a Welcome Birders Dinner on Thursday\, May 14\, dining options among Migration sponsors\, and a buffet dinner on Saturday evening.\n\nNote: Rising Lake Huron water levels have affected Tawas Point State Park.  You might need boots if you plan to walk along the shore or the Two-Track Trail to the tip of the Point. \nPlease visit the web pages provided\, which are designed to walk you through the details and locations of the Tawas Point Migration 2020 event and registration. The May 15 Friday evening program is free and open to the public. The registration fee is $25 per adult for all activities May 14 -16. Additional fees are listed for field trips/transportation. Adults age 18 and older attending only the educational program on May 16 may register at the door for $5. Birders under age 17 participate for free when accompanied by a paying adult. You may register online for the full event on this web page. Registration fees are kept low through the generous support of local sponsors. \nLinks to the Migration 2020 pages: \nField Trips with Guides\nPresentations\nLogistics and Maps\nRegistration\nPast Sponsors

SUMMARY:2020 Michigan Young Birders Camp
DESCRIPTION:Michigan Young Birders Camp\nJune 21–26\, 2020\n\nNow accepting camper applications!\nAfter a successful inaugural camp in 2018\, Michigan Audubon continues to connect young people with the diverse bird communities of the Great Lakes Region for a third year with the 2020 Michigan Young Birders Camp. Together with partners Alma College and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, Michigan Audubon hopes to reach more middle and high school students during this week filled with exciting bird and conservation adventures. \nMYBC campers spend their time at camp assisting with point counts and bird banding\, touring critical habitats for Michigan birds\, learning about wildlife rehabilitation\, studying bird biology\, and birding\, of course! Each year campers have seen nearly 100 birds during the week\, and all have checked at least one lifer off their list. \nThe MYBC promotes the development of young birders who will be the next generation of birders\, scientists\, and conservation-minded citizens. Camper experiences help them to: \n\nDevelop expertise in avian natural history;\nFoster connections with their birding peers;\nDiscover careers in bird conservation and ornithology;\nEstablish a foundation upon which they can successfully grow their passion for the natural world.\n\nWe encourage young birders and naturalists of all skill levels to participate — curiousity and enthusiasm will make it a fun week for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. \nThe MYBC is based out of Alma College\, centrally located in Michigan\, near forests\, grasslands\, wetlands\, and even the core breeding range for the rare Kirtland’s Warbler. \nCamp is open to those who will be 13 to 18 years old. Camp cost is $500 per student and includes lodging\, travel during camp\, food\, and supplies. Full and partial scholarships are available through generous donations. All scholarships are based on need and availability. \nThe application deadline is March 31\, 2020. \nContact Education Coordinator Lindsay Cain at lcain@michiganaudubon.org or (517) 580-7364 with any questions. \nCamp Application Links\n— To apply for camp\, please click here. \n— To apply for a scholarship\, click here. \nShow Your Support for MYBC 2020\n— Make a general donation toward the MYBC program. We still have more than $2\,000 to go to help us cover the cost of camp and your support is vital. \n— Contribute to the scholarship fund and help ensure camp costs don’t deter any young birders from partaking in this great opportunity. \n— Be an official sponsor of MYBC. \nDid you miss this event? SUMMARY:Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join us Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. for a free webinar to learn about Michigan Audubon’s Mi Bird-friendly Communities program — a suite of urban bird conservation projects focused on reconnecting communities with birds and the environment for the benefit of all! \nThe Mi Bird-friendly Communities program seeks to inspire environmental wonder and stewardship among city residents\, community members\, and local businesses through four programmatic elements: urban conservation education\, species-specific conservation\, native landscaping\, and hazard reduction for migratory birds. Learn how and why to bring bird conservation into your community and your backyard! \nYou can register for the webinar at http://ow.ly/A9Q550CdFof.  \nWe will also be broadcasting the webinar live through our Facebook page and a recording will be made available following the event. \nThe webinar will be presented by Michigan Audubon Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse. Linnea is an avid birder\, and though she doesn’t like to pick favorites\, she really appreciates the beauty of warblers and the subtlety of flycatchers. She grew up in Minnesota and feels lucky to have parents who encouraged her to get outdoors and got her involved with birding and other outdoor pursuits at an early age. Linnea has been working in the avian conservation field for the past 13 years and has been with Michigan Audubon since June 2018. Michigan Audubon’s core mission aligns well with Linnea’s values — to connect birds and people by employing sound conservation science\, research\, outreach\, and education. \n

SUMMARY:2021 Michigan Young Birders Camp
DESCRIPTION:We are so excited for the revamped 2021 Michigan Young Birders Camp! This virtual experience for 13- to 18-year-olds meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the last three weeks of July with independent learning opportunities in between. Our goal is to minimize our time in front of a computer while maximizing the time we spend together to provide relevant and engaging information. \nCamp sessions are held for two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon\, with optional evening sessions and occasional time for group projects. Each day focuses on a different theme related to birds and features a variety of guest speakers. Independent activities are assigned to campers to help continue our work when we aren’t together.  \nThis virtual camp experience is open to 20 enthusiastic campers\, and tuition is $175 per participant. Campers will be mailed a packet of resources\, reference materials\, and other goodies before the beginning of camp. Registration is open through June 15\, 2021\, or until filled.  \nCamp will meet on July 13\, 14\, 20\, 21\, 27\, and 28. We hope to have campers join us for all days and sessions\, but we will make accommodations for absences.  \nPlease contact Lindsay Cain at lcain@michiganaudubon.org if you have any questions or if you’re having difficulty registering.
