SUMMARY:Red Knots & Horseshoe Crabs: A Talk by Author Deborah Cramer\, August 1
DESCRIPTION:Deborah Cramer\, author\, at Wingersheek Beach in Gloucester\, MA\, November 13\, 2014.© 2014 Shawn G. Henry • 978.590.4869 \nRed knots\, flying between Tierra del Fuego and their Arctic nesting grounds each year\, take the measure of a shoreline running the length of two continents. Its flight coincides with a different migration – that of the familiar horseshoe crab. When the moon is full in spring\, horseshoe crabs emerge from Long Island Sound and other coastal waters to lay their eggs\, a prime source of protein for Red Knots. \nIt’s a feat of biological timing that has gone on for eons. But both creatures are in peril. In many of the birds’ critical stopovers\, it is a shoreline of the Anthropocene\, increasingly reshaped by development\, overfishing\, beach erosion and storm surges. These changes are touching the knots\, listed as endangered in a number of countries along its route\, and now the first U.S. bird listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act because its future is imperiled by global warming. Author Deborah Cramer accompanied the birds along their extraordinary migration to bring back a firsthand account in her award-winning book The Narrow Edge: A Tiny Bird\, An Ancient Crab\, and An Epic Journey. Join her to explore the lives of Red Knots in a rapidly changing world\, and the work of the many scientists dedicated to providing the birds safe passage. \nCramer’s talk\, sponsored by Michigan Audubon\, is free and open to the public\, however\, attendees are asked to register by July 16. The event is part of the inaugural meeting of the newly formed American Ornithological Society and the Society of Canadian Ornithologists/Société des ornithologistes du Canada. \nIn addition to the plight of the Red Knot and the horseshoe crab\, her talk will also focus on the use of the horseshoe crab’s blue blood to detect harmful bacteria during surgery on humans\, a procedure that protects patients from life-threatening infections. \nCopies of The Narrow Edge will be for sale\, and the talk will be followed by a book signing by the author. \nHonors for The Narrow Edge:\nBest Book\, National Academy of Sciences\nRachel Carson Book Award\nWinner of the Reed Award in Environmental Writing \n>> CLICK HERE TO REGISTER BY JULY 16

SUMMARY:Workshop: Swifts in the City!
DESCRIPTION:Swifts in the City! A free workshop hosted by Michigan Audubon\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, August 8 \nTime: 7 – 8:30 p.m. \nLocation: Michigan Audubon Headquarters\, 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos\, MI 48864 \n\n\nPlease join us for Michigan Audubon’s August Workshop: Swifts in the City! Have you heard chipping and chattering above your head when you’re in an urban downtown area or neighborhood? Have you seen small “bats” flying during the daytime? Chimney Swifts are unique\, “cigar-shaped” birds that live alongside people in many cities and neighborhoods and are easily confused with bats. They play an important role as natural pest control by consuming thousands of flying insects per day. Sadly\, these birds are declining across the country\, but you can help! Join us to learn about these charming city-loving birds and find out how to help through monitoring and creating habitat. The workshop will include an indoor talk followed by a short carpool to a Chimney Swift roost location to witness the amazing spectacle of roosting behavior. This workshop is great for non-birders and birders alike\, newbies to experts. Educators or community leaders are encouraged to attend as counting swifts in the fall is a fun\, easy activity for all ages and makes for a great evening community event. And consider participating in “A Swift Night Out”\, an annual continent-wide effort that began in 2001 to raise awareness about and encourage interest in Chimney Swifts and Vaux’s Swifts. On one night (Friday\, Saturday or Sunday) over the second weekend of August and/or September observe a roost starting about 30 minutes before sunset and estimate the number of swifts that enter the site. Then submit your data to the Michigan Audubon Chimney Swift Roost Monitoring project. For more information\, visit https://www.michiganaudubon.org/our-conservation-impact/chsw/.\n\n[vc_button url=”https://www.eventbrite.com/e/michigan-audubon-workshop-series-2017-swifts-in-the-city-tickets-36513775686″ text=”>> Click here to register for Swifts in the City” size=”big” align=”left” type=”primary” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]

SUMMARY:ORNITHOLOGY: AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BIRDS
DESCRIPTION:ORNITHOLOGY: AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BIRDS  is a great course for novice and intermediate birders alike.  It is also a wonderful place for photographers to learn more about their subjects. \nWe have “streamlined” the original class but it still covers topics including anatomy\, physiology\, migration\, song and flight in the Tuesday evening lectures. Saturday field trips are filled with bird identification\, behavior observations and tips on how to find those birds you seek. We usually travel by carpool to our field trip sites. \nThe class consists of 4 weeks of Tuesday evening lectures and Saturday morning field trips\, beginning on April 3.  Most field trips begin at 8 AM. We try to end as close to noon as possible. Not everyone makes it to all the classes and field trips. We definitely understand and will do our best to be  be sure you can makeup any topics you miss. \nAs in previous years\, the class size will be limited to 20 individuals. We have sold out for 4 years in a row so registering as early as you can is advisable. \nYou can register on the web site at the link below. \n[vc_button url=”https://www.miavianexperience.org/field-classes/” text=”REGISTER FOR ORNITHOLOGY: AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BIRDS” size=”” align=”left” type=”midnight” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]

A common concern when adding native plants to the landscape is their “weedy” or “messy” look – this year’s workshop is focused on bucking this misconception by teaching participants how to select native plants to fit a desired design aesthetic and still support birds\, pollinators\, and wildlife. Wesley Landon is a licensed landscape architect focused on creating resilient\, innovative places which inspire and restore the native environmental fabric of the landscape. He will be sharing his knowledge through an interactive exercise and discussion on site selection and formal design using native plants. Participants should bring aerial images\, sketches of a future garden project\, and/or knowledge about specific site conditions to discuss during the exercise. \nThis workshop will feature an indoor educational session followed by an outdoor walk to view good examples of a bird-friendly landscape. In the afternoon\, the group will travel to Wildtype in Mason\, where owner Bill Schneider will give a tour of this unique native plant nursery and participants will have the opportunity to shop and explore during one of the few days this great resource is open to the public. Participants will take home a resource folder packed with helpful tips and a native shrub to kick-start a backyard habitat transformation. A buffet lunch is included with registration along with a packet of take-home resources. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors as this event will take place rain or shine. \nIf you love watching birds\, please join us to learn how you can support our birds by stewarding healthy native habitat around your home\, office\, school\, or neighborhood. \nCost: $25 for Michigan Audubon or Woldumar Nature Center members; $35 for non-members of either organization \n[vc_button url=”https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2018-backyard-bird-habitat-workshop-tickets-45248807401″ text=”>> Click here to register for the Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop” size=”” align=”left” type=”midnight” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]

SUMMARY:Seminar Series: The Art of Birding "by Ear" with Jim McGrath
DESCRIPTION:Studying field guides is valuable for identifying wild birds around you\, but what about the ones that you can’t see? When you gain the ability to “bird by ear\,” you propel yourself to a level of avian awareness that blows away identification by sight alone. Join Nature Discovery’s Jim McGrath for this visually and auditorially-stimulating presentation. Jim will introduce participants to word handles and other tips to help you recognize and remember a host of common birdsongs. At the presentation’s conclusion\, weather permitting\, participants are invited to step outside and begin to put their newly-gained skills to work. Don’t forget your binoculars! Don’t have binoculars? No worries! We’ll have extras on hand. \nThis event is part of the Michigan Audubon Seminar Series. Seminars are free and open to the public. Sessions take place on the second Monday of each month from 7 – 8 p.m. at the Michigan Audubon office located at 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos MI\, 48864.
