SUMMARY:Swift Night Out September 18 & 21 at Smith Floral - Lansing
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a Swift Night Out with Michigan Audubon on Friday\, September 18th or Monday\, September 21st and celebrate urban wildlife at Smith Floral & Greenhouses by watching Chimney Swifts come in to roost. \nThis free\, family-friendly event features an amazing spectacle at dusk\, when hundreds of Chimney Swifts flock together in a tornado-like formation\, flying in increasingly tighter circles before dropping into the chimney where they roost for the night. \nThese urban birds have suffered a steep population decline in recent decades due to loss of habitat\, insecticide use\, climate change\, and more. Information on how you can help this species\, including citizen science projects\, will be available at the event. \nOf course\, in true birdwatching fashion\, we wait with bated breath each evening—because swifts are wild creatures\, and they don’t always RSVP. But that just makes the moment they do appear even more thrilling! Please bring a chair if you would like to sit while watching. \nThe event begins at 7:30 p.m. with time to chat with fellow bird lovers and ask Michigan Audubon’s Conservation Manager\, Chad Machinski\, M.S.\, all your swift-related questions—he’ll be on hand to share his knowledge and enthusiasm! Most Chimney Swift activity will start just before sunset and continue through dusk. \nPlease meet at the Smith Floral & Greenhouses’ parking lot at 1124 E. Mt. Hope Ave.\, Lansing\, MI 48910. \n*ALTERNATE ROUTE DUE TO CONSTRUCTION – Access from Mt. Hope may not be available during this event. Please visit our site for directions and detour updates. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Manager Chad Machinski at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7564 or Kristy Taylor\, Events & Outreach Manager at ktaylor@michiganaudubon.org

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: WBNA - Swift Night Out
DESCRIPTION:Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance and the City of Ann Arbor Natural Area Preservation invite you to join us for our Annual Ann Arbor-Washtenaw County Chimney Swift count.  Watching Chimney Swifts enter their roosts at dusk is a spectacular sight (video and more information here). Volunteers will choose a known Chimney Swift roosting location and stake it out before dusk\, counting the Swifts as they enter the chimney\, as darkness falls. You can sign up for one night/one location at a time\, or count each night of the weekend. \nChimney Swifts are in steep decline across North America and this volunteer effort is an important part of understanding how the species is faring in Washtenaw County. Habitat loss is one reason\, as well as decline of the insects they eat\, and other unknown factors. We are helping bird science by conducting this count! This is a great experience for non-birders—bring your friends and family to show them how these very cool aerial insectivores share our cities and towns with us. \nNOTE: Occasionally the Swifts will not use a particular location on a given night due to a predator such as a Cooper’s Hawk\, or another issue. In that case\, “No Swifts” will still be good information for us! \nMore information about how to participate\, including a sign-up form\, will be posted on their event site\, so please check back as the weekend gets closer.  \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Michigan Loon Preservation Loon Count
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, July 18\, the Michigan Loon Preservation Association will conduct its First Michigan Loon Count. \nThis effort will create an important statewide snapshot of Michigan’s loon population. The information you collect will help us better understand population trends\, identify conservation priorities\, and strengthen our efforts to protect loons and the lakes they call home. \nParticipating is simple: \n\nRegister at link below. On the day of the event you will get a text or email with a link to file your report.\n\nRegister Michigan Loon Count \n\nOn July 18\, count and record the number of loons observed on your lake.\nSubmit your observations through our reporting system.\n\nEvery loon lake matters. Thank you for your help!  \nWhether your lake has one loon pair\, several families\, or no loons at all\, your observations provide valuable information. \nConservation decisions are only as good as the data behind them\, and citizen scientists like you make that work possible. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Michigan Clean Water Corps: Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Detection Blitz
DESCRIPTION:MiCorps Aquatic Invasive Species Detection Blitz\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe MiCorps AIS Detection Blitz is a statewide community science event aimed at identifying and documenting aquatic invasive species such as zebra mussels\, Eurasian watermilfoil\, or anything else you suspect may be invasive in Michigan’s lakes\, rivers\, and wetlands. Organized by the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps)\, this Blitz welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds\, whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or a first-time observer. Between June 29 and July 12\, 2026\, simply snap photos of potential invasive species and upload them to the MiCorps project on the free iNaturalist app. By working together in this coordinated effort\, we can track the spread of AIS\, strengthen early detection strategies\, and inform better management decisions. Whether you’re on the water for the July 4th holiday or just enjoying a local spot\, every observation counts! \nParticipants do not need to be experts in aquatic invasive species to take part. Birders can help by documenting mute swans\, and they are also welcome to upload photos of any suspected aquatic invasive plants or animals they notice near the water. If you are not sure what something is\, you can upload the observation anyway\, and the iNaturalist community can help with identification. Once you join the project on iNaturalist\, anything uploaded during the event window is automatically added to a statewide AIS map.\n\nThis is a simple way for people already observing Michigan’s waters and wetlands to contribute to a larger community science effort.\n\nThe easiest way to get started is to download the free iNaturalist app\, search “2026 MiCorps AIS Detection Blitz\,” and join the project.\n\niNaturalist project link:\nhttps://www.inaturalist.org/projects/2026-micorps-ais-detection-blitz-849bdc20-614a-42dd-ae4b-ee418e0e2df4\n\n\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:Michigan Audubon Birdathon
DESCRIPTION:Community Powered. Science Driven.  \nBirdathon is back! This year we’re transforming our traditional Birdathon Big Day into a week-long celebration of birds\, research\, and community-powered conservation. \nFrom May 18-25\, chapter teams will each select a 24-hour period to count as many birds as possible at Michigan Audubon sanctuaries\, Michigan Nature Association properties and/or established eBird hotspots around the state. Every species documented contributes to a clearer understanding of bird diversity and habitat use during spring migration. \nOur Goal: Raise $15\,000 to strengthen bird research across Michigan! \nSupport the effort by making a general donation or by donating to a chapter team. \nEach chapter team receives 10% of the funds they raise\, and chapters with the most donations and the most recorded bird species will each receive 25% of the funds they raise. \nClick here to: \n\nSubmit a general donation\nSupport a chapter team\nLearn more about Birdathon

SUMMARY:Swift Night Out
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) with Michigan Audubon May 4 – 9 with a week of Swift Night Out evenings. \nThe theme of this year’s WMBD is “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter” highlighting the role of public participation in bird conservation. Chimney Swift success is now intertwined with human habitation and is one of the focal species for Michigan Audubon community science reporting. Roosts from all over Michigan are monitored and reported to learn about the changing populations of these amazing aerial insectivores. \nSwift Night Out\, hosted by Michigan Audubon\, will be held each night from May 4–9\, 8:00–9:30 p.m.\, at Smith Floral & Greenhouses\, located at 1124 E. Mt. Hope Ave.\, Lansing\, MI 48910. \n*POSSIBLE ALTERNATE ROUTE DUE TO CONSTRUCTION – Mt. Hope will be closed near the location\, please use the posted detours. Please access the parking lot from Alpha St. from the South and West\, and using Shubel road from the North and East. \nThis free\, family-friendly event is your chance to witness one of nature’s most mesmerizing sky shows: hundreds of Chimney Swifts swirling in a tornado-like formation before swooping into their evening roost. It’s a magical\, urban wildlife spectacle you won’t want to miss! Please bring a chair if you would like to sit while watching. \nArrive early to chat with fellow bird lovers and ask Michigan Audubon Staff all your swift-related questions—they will be on hand to share their knowledge and enthusiasm! \nOf course\, in true birdwatching fashion\, we wait with bated breath each evening for their sunset arrival — because swifts are wild creatures\, they don’t always RSVP. That just makes the moment they do appear even more thrilling! \nThese incredible birds have faced steep population declines due to habitat loss\, insecticide use\, and climate change. At the event\, you’ll also learn how you can help protect them through conservation and community science efforts. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Manager Chad Machinski\, M.S.\, at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7564 or Kristy Taylor Events & Outreach Manager at ktaylor@michiganaudubon.org . \nYou can learn more about World Migratory Bird Day at https://www.migratorybirdday.org/.
