SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Great Backyard Bird Count – February 13-16 \nSpend time in your favorite places watching birds—then tell us about them! In as little as 15 minutes notice the birds around you. Identify them\, count them\, and submit your counts to help scientists better understand and protect birds around the world. If you already use eBird or Merlin\, your submissions over the 4 days count toward GBBC. \nInformation for this event is available at https://www.birdcount.org/ \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:Swift Night Out - Spring Arbor
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a Swift Night Out with Michigan Audubon and the Jackson Audubon Society on August 25th and celebrate urban wildlife at Spring Arbor University by watching Chimney Swifts come in to roost. \nThis free\, family-friendly event features an amazing spectacle at dusk\, when hundreds of Chimney Swifts flock together in a tornado-like formation\, flying in increasingly tighter circles before dropping into the chimney where they roost for the night. \nThese urban birds have suffered a steep population decline in recent decades due to loss of habitat\, insecticide use\, climate change\, and more. Information on how you can help this species\, including citizen science projects\, will be available at the event. \nThe event begins at 7:30 p.m. for social time with most Chimney Swift activity starting just before sunset and continuing through dusk. Please meet us on Spring Arbor’s campus between Ormston Hall and White Auditorium along Cottage St. across from The Arbor Church. Parking is available along Cottage St. and surrounding parking lots. For directions\, please use 120 E Main St. Spring Arbor\, MI 49283 as your destination\, but note that this address takes you directly to The Arbor Church. Parking can be found along Cottage St. west of The Arbor Church and in the parking lot north of The Arbor Church. Please see attached map for locations of buildings and meeting location. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Manager Chad Machinski at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7564. \nSpring Arbor Swift Night Out Map

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Great Backyard Bird Count 2024
DESCRIPTION:Fun for one becomes multiplied when birders join forces for the annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). Participating with friends\, family\, or a community group means there are more eyes to spot the birds and a deeper well of knowledge to draw from. Knowing where birds are seen—and not seen—is more important than ever during this El Niño year\, and as climate change weather fluctuations influence bird movements. \nThe 27th annual Great Backyard Bird Count is taking place February 16 through 19\, 2024. \nMore than an estimated half-million people participated during the 2023 GBBC. They reported more than 7\,500 species of birds from 200+ countries. \nTo take part in the 2024 GBBC\, each participant or group counts birds for any length of time (but for at least 15 minutes) and enters the birds they could identify at each site they visited. That could be their backyard\, but it could also be a park\, a wilderness area\, apartment balcony\, or a neighborhood street. \nFirst-timers should make it a point to read complete instructions on the GBBC website where they will also find helpful birding tips and birding app downloads. The GBBC website also features a new map for marking local GBBC community events. Birders can join up to help celebrate birds in their hometown. https://www.birdcount.org/community-map/ \nThe Great Backyard Bird Count is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, National Audubon Society\, and Birds Canada and is made possible in part by founding sponsor Wild Birds Unlimited.

SUMMARY:Baker Sanctuary Fall Sandhill Crane Survey
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to witness the wonder of Sandhill Crane migration? Join Michigan Audubon for our Fall Sandhill Crane Survey of Bernard W. Baker Sanctuary on November 1! \nThe count will be conducted from the Kiwanis Youth Conservation Area overlooking Big Marsh Lake in Bellevue from 4:30 p.m. to dusk. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on\, and grab your binoculars to watch as potentially thousands of cranes come in to roost for the night. In 2021\, 3\,106 Sandhill Cranes were counted by volunteer Josh Haas and Michigan Audubon staff. \nThis event is part of the annual standardized count of the eastern population of Sandhill Cranes that is organized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Since its onset in 1979\, eight states and one province have participated\, and the population has grown to more than 90\,000 cranes. \nThe Kiwanis Youth Conservation Area is located at 22300 15 Mile Rd.\, Bellevue\, MI 49021. \nIf you have any questions\, please email events@michiganaudubon.org. \nIn the event of inclement weather\, the crane count will be held on Nov. 2. \nFeatured photo: Sandhill Cranes gather at a staging area during fall migration in Michigan. SUMMARY:Swifts in the City
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard chipping and chattering above your head when you’re in an urban downtown area or neighborhood? Have you seen small “bats” flying during the daytime? Chimney Swifts are unique\, “cigar-shaped” birds that live alongside people in many cities and neighborhoods and are easily confused with bats. They play an important role as natural pest control by consuming thousands of flying insects per day. Sadly\, these birds are declining across the country\, but you can help! \nJoin Rachelle Roake from Michigan Audubon to learn about these charming city-loving birds and find out how to help through monitoring and creating habitat. The workshop will include an indoor talk followed by a short carpool to a Chimney Swift roost location to witness the amazing spectacle of roosting behavior. This workshop is great for non-birders and birders alike\, newbies to experts. \n\nThis program is open to all ages. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear to be outside. We will have the program rain or shine. \nTo register for this program please follow the “Tickets” link or visit woldumar.org

SUMMARY:Swift Night Out in East Lansing
DESCRIPTION:Join Michigan Audubon for a social hour and swift viewing event on Monday\, August 28 at 7 p.m. We will meet at Crunchy’s for a drink or dinner\, then walk to the nearby People’s Church (200 W Grand River Ave\, East Lansing\, MI) at 8 p.m. to watch the roost chimney. Swifts will start gathering in large numbers around 8:30 p.m. and the spectacle will end by 9 p.m. No birding experience or equipment is necessary but cameras and binoculars are encouraged. Come out for a fun\, casual evening to view these urban birds as they migrate south! \nRSVP to Rachelle Roake at rroake@michiganaudubon.org or (517) 580-7364. This event is weather dependent and will be canceled for rain. Those who RSVP ahead of time will receive an email notification announcing any changes. \nIf you’re not able to join us\, you can still help! SUMMARY:Workshop: Swifts in the City!
DESCRIPTION:Swifts in the City! A free workshop hosted by Michigan Audubon\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, August 8 \nTime: 7 – 8:30 p.m. \nLocation: Michigan Audubon Headquarters\, 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos\, MI 48864 \n\n\nPlease join us for Michigan Audubon’s August Workshop: Swifts in the City! Have you heard chipping and chattering above your head when you’re in an urban downtown area or neighborhood? Have you seen small “bats” flying during the daytime? Chimney Swifts are unique\, “cigar-shaped” birds that live alongside people in many cities and neighborhoods and are easily confused with bats. They play an important role as natural pest control by consuming thousands of flying insects per day. Sadly\, these birds are declining across the country\, but you can help! Join us to learn about these charming city-loving birds and find out how to help through monitoring and creating habitat. The workshop will include an indoor talk followed by a short carpool to a Chimney Swift roost location to witness the amazing spectacle of roosting behavior. This workshop is great for non-birders and birders alike\, newbies to experts. Educators or community leaders are encouraged to attend as counting swifts in the fall is a fun\, easy activity for all ages and makes for a great evening community event. And consider participating in “A Swift Night Out”\, an annual continent-wide effort that began in 2001 to raise awareness about and encourage interest in Chimney Swifts and Vaux’s Swifts. On one night (Friday\, Saturday or Sunday) over the second weekend of August and/or September observe a roost starting about 30 minutes before sunset and estimate the number of swifts that enter the site. Then submit your data to the Michigan Audubon Chimney Swift Roost Monitoring project. SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society\, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real-time. \nNow\, more than 160\,000 people of all ages and walks of life worldwide join the four-day count each February to create an annual snapshot of the distribution and abundance of birds. \nWe invite you to participate! For at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count\, February 17-20\, 2017\, simply tally the numbers and kinds of birds you see. You can count from any location\, anywhere in the world\, for as long as you wish! \nIf you’re new to the count\, or have not participated since before the 2013 merger with eBird\, you must create a free online account to enter your checklists. If you already have an account\, just use the same login name and password. If you have already participated in another Cornell Lab citizen-science project\, you can use your existing login information\, too. \nClick here for more info on how to get started.
