SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance - World Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:Please join dozens of enthusiastic volunteers for the Washtenaw County May Count\, on World Migratory Bird Day and eBird’s Global Big Day. This event is a day to be out there counting all the birds we can find\, and it’s a super fun Big Day! \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER! \nJuliet Berger is the organizer for this countywide count\, which uses eBird to benefit bird science with its comprehensive results. The organizer divides the county into townships\, each of which has an Area Leader. Leaders recruit additional volunteers to count birds throughout their area. \nWe could always use more volunteers across the county\, as well as a couple of township leaders. Come join in the fun and go birding! \nWashtenaw County May Count Organizer and Compiler: Juliet Berger \nHere are the basics for volunteers: \n\nEvery counter should use eBird to record birds at every site you visit for birding.\nSave each list indicating 2 observers\, even if you are the only observer. This enables the sharing option via mobile devices\, which you need in the next step.\nShare each list with the eBird township username for the township in which you are birding. These usernames are in the table on the website. Please do this as soon as possible; preferably by the end of the day\, but certainly by the end of the weekend.\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Petoskey Regional Audubon - Saturday Morning Birding Walks
DESCRIPTION:The Petoskey Regional Audubon Society invites you to birding walks at Little Traverse Conservancy’s Waldron Fen Preserve on Saturday mornings during the month of May at 8am. \nSpot migratory and resident bird species on this hike throughout a variety of habitats led by trip leader Brooke Knickerbocker – an enthusiastic birder and high school student. This preserve has nearly 2 miles of trails\, two small ponds\, a viewing platform\, and is a sizable wetland-fen complex. Expect this walk to take two to three hours. \nWe will meet in the dirt parking lot next to the Waldron Fen Nature Preserve sign off Banwell Road (look for the LTC sign). The parking area is unpaved and offers no restroom facilities. Bug spray is strongly encouraged. Trails can be muddy. Proper footwear is a must. The trail is a loop and there is no short-cut back. \nThe Fen truly is a magical spot with 148 acres. For example\, on one morning in May 2025 our small group called 51 species and 137 individual birds. The terrain is uneven\, sometimes wet\, and bug spray is always recommended. As you can imagine\, birds love this kind of habitat; but it’s not for everyone. \n  \nNotes:  \n\nRSVP is not necessary to attend the bird walk. Just show up.\nBring binoculars if you have them. If not\, loaner pairs will be available.\nBeginning birders always welcome.\nNo pets. No smoking.\nDress for conditions and insect protection.\nDirections – From Alanson\, head east on M-68 to Banwell Road. Turn right. Continue on Banwell 3.3 miles to entrance on left.\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Petoskey Regional Audubon Society - Wednesday Walks
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday Evening Birding Walks at Sportsman’s Park East Jordan\nThe Petoskey Regional Audubon Society invites you to birding walks at Sportsman’s Park in East Jordan\, on Wednesdays in May from 6:30-8pm. During this walk we will explore multiple habitat types.  Participants will meet at the Sportsman’s Park parking area.  Please bring your binoculars. Knowledgeable guide and PRAS member and past President\, Darrell Lawson\, will be available for each group to identify bird species by sight or vocalization and to answer questions. \nThe first area we will visit is the platform overlooking the mouth of the Jordan River.  This location features a deep river channel bordered by mudflats and cattail marshes.  The area usually holds many dabbling ducks\, geese\, swans\, herons (potential for Great Egret)\, Sandhill Cranes\, coots\, and others.  Shorebirds may be patrolling the mudflats and river edges. \nThe second area we will visit is the new Don & Eileen Klein Nature Trail.  This walk includes some scrubby hardwood forest and an extensive boardwalk through a large cattail marsh.  Here there should be plenty of blackbirds\, sparrows\, and the potential for rails.  Raptors including Bald Eagles\, Red-tailed Hawks\, Red-shouldered Hawks\, Northern Harrier\, Osprey\, Merlin and others are a possibility in any area.  This walk should allow participants to see many of Michigan’s spectacular resident and migratory bird species! \nNotes:  \n\nRSVP is not necessary to attend the bird walk. Just show up.\nPlease do not bring pets as these can disrupt both the behavior of the birds and the birding experience for others.\nBring binoculars if you have them. If not\, loaner pairs will be available.\nRestrooms are available at the parking area.\nBeginning birders always welcome.\nNo pets. No smoking.\nChildren welcome with adult supervision.\nDress for conditions and insect protection.\n\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Grand Rapids Audubon Club - Habitat Restoration on Michigan Audubon Sanctuaries
DESCRIPTION:Habitat Restoration and Creation on Michigan Audubon Sanctuaries \nChad Machinski\, Conservation Manager for Michigan Audubon\, will talk with us about his efforts at properties managed by his organization. \nMonday\, APril 27\, 7:30 PM 8:30 PM\nAquinas College Donnelly Conference Center (map)\nGoogle Calendar ICS \nAcross many of Michigan Audubon’s Sanctuaries\, active habitat restoration and creation is an ongoing project. Chad will discuss where this work is going on\, why the work is going on\, and how the work is happening. Chad’s presentation will focus on three Michigan Audubon Sanctuaries as examples of specific work: The Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary\, the Otis Farm Bird Sanctuary\, and the Martha Mott Bird Sanctuary. Attendees will also learn about ways they can get involved with Michigan Audubon work. \nWhile Chad’s first love is botany\, he doesn’t deny the intertwining nature of birds\, plants\, insects\, and all other organisms we share the world with. As Michigan Audubon’s Conservation Manager\, Chad is responsible for the management and care for all 20 of Michigan Audubon’s Sanctuaries around the state and bird specific programs such as Chimney Swift and Purple Martin conservation. In his spare time\, Chad tends to think about many of the same things he does at work: plants\, birds\, and insects. \nThis program is open to the public\, who may attend as guests of the Grand Rapids Audubon Club. Doors of the Donnelly Center open at 7:00pm; come early to meet fellow members\, browse the large selection of library items\, and connect with others about birding. The program begins at 7:30 pm. \n  \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Program - PEOPLE\, PLACES\, BIRDS
DESCRIPTION:APRIL MONTHLY MEETING: “PEOPLE\, PLACES\, BIRDS” \nBy Dave Lemberg and Daniel Bernard \nMonday\, April 27th\, 6:30pm -8:00pm \nPeople’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo \nThis month’s program will showcase Daniel Bernard’s year of birding across America. In 2025\, Daniel Bernard embarked on a birding journey as crazy as it was unique: a quest to travel the entire country and see 100 species of birds in every single lower-48 state\, meet up with local birders all across the country\, and visit birding locales both legendary and unknown. This life-changing journey to explore the “People\, Places\, and Birds” of the American birding world saw Daniel living out of the back of his Subaru Crosstrek and would be filled with hardships and setbacks\, but in the end – after travelling the farthest south\, east\, north\, and west he’d ever been\, birding with over 300 different birders across the country\, and tallying 607 different species ─ Daniel would accomplish his goal of becoming perhaps the first person ever to see 100 species in every lower-48 state in a single year. \nGrowing up the son of an avid birder and naturalist\, Daniel Bernard has held a lifelong enthusiasm for biology and nature\, but the particular passion of birding eluded him for most of his life. After finally caving and accompanying his dad to the Biggest Week in American Birding Festival at Magee Marsh in 2018\, Daniel quickly took to the hobby with an obsessive passion\, and in 2022 set out to do a Michigan “Big Year” during which he recorded 337 species in Michigan. \nWe hope you’ll join us on . This program is geared to all audiences\, and we enthusiastically invite families and nature lovers of any age to join us!  Come at 6:30 PM (new time – half an hour earlier this year) for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. It’s helpful if you bring your own coffee cup. The one-hour program will start at 7:00 PM. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance of the building. \nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be available shortly before the meeting in the May newsletter that is emailed to you. We will also be recording the meeting for later viewing. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event.
