SUMMARY:Grand Rapids Audubon Club Event
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Grand Rapids Audubon Club\nMay 9\, 2015\, Saturday \nSpring Migration Count \nCoordinator: Steve Minard Join us counting birds on the second Saturday of May for the spring North American Migration Count. In Michigan\, we count birds and tabulate results by county for this worldwide event. Locally we focus on Kent County\, but counters are needed across the state. This is a 24-hour count period\, but every 1- or 2-hour count helps. Plan to bird your favorite place for the spring migration count. Watch the Caller in the spring for details on this count.

SUMMARY:Grand Rapids Audubon Club Event
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Grand Rapids Audubon Club\nBerrien County Warblers Trip \nMay 16\, 2015\, Saturday\, 6:30 AM \nLeader: Scott Hutchings \nThis is a prime date for warblers at Warren Dunes State Park\, and the trails from Floral Lane entrance will be the major focus. This is a heavily birded area and species such as Worm-eating Warbler\, Kentucky Warbler\, Mourning Warbler and Connecticut Warbler are reported from here many years. This will be a little early for Mourning and Connecticut\, but at least 1 of the 4 will be reported for the week. Prairie Warblers nest out in open dune areas here. If you make the effort\, they can be found. Other possible stops are the 3 Oaks Sewage Ponds and the South Branch of the Galien River. The Kesling Nature Preserve on Forest Lawn Road and Lakeside Road are both good for Yellow-throated Warbler\, Cerulean Warbler and Whiteeyed Vireo. In recent years\, Fish Crows have been reported from the nearby dump. Other stops are possible\, including Galien River Park north of New Buffalo and Chikaming Township Park. Bring your CB or Family radio if you have one and we’ll try to keep in touch between cars. Birders of all skills are welcome. Essentials: Meet at the McDonald’s in Hudsonville\, north of the freeway\, at 6:30 AM. Plan to leave extra cars in the car pool lot on the way back to the freeway. This is a longer trip than most of our trips since it is a 90-minute drive to areas near the state line. Plan on the better part of the day for the trip. Bring snacks and drinks to keep you going. A lunch stop is planned. Safety Hazards: Driving in a caravan can be hazardous. Get directions from the leader for travel to the next stop. Please exercise caution on the roads at all times\, and watch the car ahead of you when driving in a caravan. Bugs and poison ivy are likely; take appropriate precautions. Please have a passenger handle all radio or phone communications while in a car. \n

SUMMARY:Petoskey Regional Audubon Society Chapter Event
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Woods & Stream Birding near Cross Village – Petoskey Regional Audubon Society\nFriday\, July 24\, 2015\, 10:00 am \nLeaders: June Summers & Tracy Datlen \nDetails: \nThe owner (and new PRAS member) of this 100-acre pristine property of dense woods\, wetland and stream has invited Petoskey Audubon members on a very special bird walk and nature outing. Due to the undisturbed nature of this property there are abundant native plants in addition to birds. On this walk we will focus on a short 1/2-mile loop near the stream and wetland. We will make frequent stops of about 15 minutes to allow the birds to come in to us. Bring a folding chair and/or spotting scope. The best birding at this location is stationary. There is a lot of birding by ear. The location is at a private home with limited parking. For directions and further details\, please contact Tracy Datlen at tadatl@live.com. Due to parking constraints and the sensitive nature of the property (among other things\, there’s an active turtle nest in the driveway) some coordination of cars and participants is required. Carpooling recommended. Optional dutch-treat lunch at an area restaurant after the walk. \nQuestions: \nContact Tracy Datlen

Enjoy views of the Waugoshance Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula\, and linger at the interesting seating areas they have created. Through their creativity and love for the land\, they have turned their 80-acre property into a wonderful place to quietly observe nature and take leisurely walks. On the July walk 9 participants identified 29 species of birds and also saw deer\, wildflowers and several species of butterflies including Monarch and Red Admiral. Bring binoculars\, bug spray\, sunscreen and hat. Don’t forget your camera\, the views are amazing. Weather is changeable so bring layers. Plan on a 2-3 hour stroll on gently undulating terrain.  Dutch treat/group lunch to follow\, at Legs Inn or Moose Jaw Junction\, for those interested. \nWEATHER NOTE: Our membership covers a large geographic area. Just because it’s raining in your location\, it doesn’t mean that rain is also at the field trip location. When checking the weather report\, check for Cross Village weather to get an idea of what the day will hold. Our hosts and Audubon members Ken and Debbie live on the property and will be there rain or shine. \nIMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS: Please be courteous to the residents along this local\, unpaved road. DRIVE SLOWLY to  keep the level of dust and noise down. It is important to maintain good relations with the neighbors. Even better\, please carpool if you’re able. \nDirections:  From Cross Village go east on Levering Road about 1.5 miles\, then turn south on Lookout Road.  Go approx. one-half mile to the top of Lookout Road where it dead-ends\, and turn into the field at the right to park.  The walk will start from there. \nFrom the south\, take US-31 north to Levering Road. Go east 10 miles. Pass Hill Road on your left. Turn south on Lookout road and follow directions above.
