SUMMARY:COMMUNITY-Nature Photography: A Close-Up Look at the Birds\, Bugs and Other Critters in our Local Preserves
DESCRIPTION:What to do with ourselves upon retirement? This is a question pondered by so many of us\, whether in the past\, present\, or future. January meeting speakers are Audubon Society of Kalamazoo members\, Jeanne and Mel Church\, who will share their approach to the retirement conundrum. Learn how they got started on a photo adventure after completing fulfilling professional lives. In addition to demonstrating some of the equipment that makes this adventure possible\, they will share the pictures themselves. We will see stunning bird photos\, as well as images of butterflies\, dragonflies\, frogs\, and mammals. While these nature photographers travel all over the United States as well as abroad\, this presentation will focus on their observations from preserves in the greater Kalamazoo area.

SUMMARY:CANCELED — COMMUNITY: Tawas Point Migration 2020
DESCRIPTION:In response to COVID-19\, this event has been canceled. \nA Birding Adventure from AuSable Valley Audubon: The 15th Spring birding event at Tawas Point in Iosco County \nTawas Point on the shore of Lake Huron is a natural birding hotspot in the Spring as migrating birds follow the shoreline to their summer nesting habitats. Songbirds\, shorebirds\, and raptors all may be seen at this location and throughout Iosco County at forest\, wetland\, and lake sites during May. \nSince 2006\, AuSable Valley Audubon\, a chapter of Michigan Audubon\, has hosted an event to both educate and celebrate with local government\, businesses\, and interested nature enthusiasts the impact and importance of bird migration in this area. The program has attracted growing participation from throughout Michigan and a broader\, even international\, area. \nThe Tawas Point Migration 2020 program offers a combination of high-quality guided birding opportunities for small groups coupled with indoor educational sessions designed for birders of all ages. \n\nField trips include trails at Tawas Point State Park and car-pool/bus destinations in Iosco County. Participants can expect to see Whip-poor-wills\, Red-headed Woodpeckers\, Trumpeter Swans\, migrating warblers\, and our featured Scarlet Tanagers. Some field trips focus on the unique Kirtland’s Warbler habitat.\n\n\nThe educational program includes hands-on nature activities for kids as well as two new hour-long live birds of prey shows. Other sessions include Monarch Butterfly raising\, Trumpeter Swans\, and Eagle Research.\nFood Service offers a Welcome Birders Dinner on Thursday\, May 14\, dining options among Migration sponsors\, and a buffet dinner on Saturday evening.\n\nNote: Rising Lake Huron water levels have affected Tawas Point State Park.  You might need boots if you plan to walk along the shore or the Two-Track Trail to the tip of the Point. \nPlease visit the web pages provided\, which are designed to walk you through the details and locations of the Tawas Point Migration 2020 event and registration. The May 15 Friday evening program is free and open to the public. The registration fee is $25 per adult for all activities May 14 -16. Additional fees are listed for field trips/transportation. Adults age 18 and older attending only the educational program on May 16 may register at the door for $5. Birders under age 17 participate for free when accompanied by a paying adult. You may register online for the full event on this web page. Registration fees are kept low through the generous support of local sponsors. \nLinks to the Migration 2020 pages: \nField Trips with Guides\nPresentations\nLogistics and Maps\nRegistration\nPast Sponsors

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: WAS Meeting - Demystifying Great Lakes Waterbirds in Flight - with Alison Világ
DESCRIPTION:For many of us\, identifying ducks\, loons\, and grebes in flight comes with a high intimidation factor: these waterbirds travel quickly and seem just subtly different. But lakewatching offers some of Michigan’s most exciting birding opportunities. Join Alison Világ\, who’s conducted WPBO’s waterbird count for three seasons\, as she breaks down her methods of unraveling these sorts of identifications.\nAlison Világ grew up with the Berrien Bird Club in southwest Michigan and currently calls Traverse City home. She worked at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory as waterbird counter and Piping Plover monitor from 2019 through early fall 2020\, and then counted waterbirds further west on Lake Superior in October 2020.\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/97648849414\nOr dial-in: +1 312 626 6799\nMeeting ID: 976 4884 9414\nNo password\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: WAS Meeting - The Delisting of the Gray Wolf: A Conservation’s Call to Action
DESCRIPTION:The Delisting of the Gray Wolf:  A Conservation’s Call to Action\n\nGray Wolves were delisted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services in the entire lower 48 states\, effective January 4\, 2021. Given that the Gray Wolf has viable populations in only a handful of states\, this seems to be an effort to prevent\, not encourage\, further recovery of a still endangered species. Join Washtenaw Audubon’s Conservation Chair\, Cathy Theisen\, DVM\, to examine why this unusual and scientifically unsound interpretation of the Endangered Species Act should be of concern to conservationists\, birders and wildlife watchers everywhere. Zoom link below:\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99877609593\nOr dial-in: +1 312 626 6799\nMeeting ID: 998 7760 9593\nNo password\n\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: WAS Meeting - The Kirtland's Warbler: From the brink of extinction to a new model for endangered species conservation
DESCRIPTION:The Kirtland’s Warbler\, once on the brink of extinction\, was removed from the Endangered Species List in 2019. There are lots of reasons to celebrate\, but we can’t say we’re done and walk. The continuing conservation of the Kirtland’s Warbler has special challenges. The Kirtland’s Warbler is “conservation reliant\,” which means that humans will need to continue to intervene on its behalf for as long as we can see into the future. But\, that intervention will include some bold new thinking.\n\nBill Rapai is executive director of the Kirtland’s Warbler Alliance\, a nonprofit formed in 2013 to support Kirtland’s Warbler conservation. He is also the author of The Kirtland’s Warbler: The story of a bird’s fight for survival and the people who saved it\, published in 2012 by University of Michigan Press.\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99024353948\nOr dial-in: +1 312 626 6799\nMeeting ID: 990 2435 3948\nNo password\n\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: WAS Meeting - Birding Devon and Beyond with Ben Lucking
DESCRIPTION:After racking up 266 species in Washtenaw County since he started birding here as a lad\, often on Washtenaw Audubon field trips\, Ben Lucking transferred to the University of Exeter in the English county of Devon. Though he obviously spends much of his time studying\, in his spare time he’s seen 170 species in his couple of years in Devon\, good for 7th place on the eBird top 100 life list for the county. From his room in Devon via the magic of Zoom\, Ben will describe some of his birding adventures in the UK\, with a few forays to more exotic locales\, such as North Africa.\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/97522069279\nOr dial-in: +1 312 626 6799\nMeeting ID: 975 2206 9279\nNo password\n\n  \n\n  \nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo: April Meeting
DESCRIPTION:APRIL PROGRAM “Two Rivers Coalition: Partnering with Prothonotary Warblers” \nTwo Rivers Coalition (TRC) is a citizen-based nonprofit group working to protect the health and promote the awareness of the Black River and Paw Paw River Watersheds through conservation\, education\, and advocacy. TRC\, along with several partners and volunteers\, supports a variety of projects and activities including aquatic macro invertebrate studies\, water quality analysis\, invasive species education\, paddling events\, and educational meetings. TRC is also involved in supporting the Paw Paw River Water Trail and the Black River Water Trail. \nProthonotary Warblers are bright\, colorful\, vibrant yellow warblers that can be found nesting along river floodplain forests\, swamps\, and forest ponds. Southwest Michigan is at the northern edge of the Prothonotary Warbler’s breeding range. Research supports that Prothonotary Warblers can also be an indicator species of the ecological integrity of the floodplain forests where they nest. \nTRC has launched a project\, led by Dan Burton\, to look into the distribution and abundance of Prothonotary Warblers nesting in the floodplain forest corridor along the Paw Paw River. Following study information from other areas\, TRC has also launched a Prothonotary Warbler Nest Box Project to see if the warblers will utilize the “man-made” nest boxes at a couple of locations along the Paw Paw River. \nPlease join us Monday\, April 24th\, as Dan Burton presents an overview of Two Rivers Coalition and the TRC Prothonotary Warbler Project. Dan has worked as a food scientist and quality engineer for 30 years\, but spends his free time exploring his interests and passion in the outdoors through a variety of activities. Those activities include 30 years involved in aquatic macro invertebrate studies\, ten years doing frog and toad surveys and butterfly surveys\, and he has also participated in Monarch research and Bumble Bee surveys. Dan is also a MSU certified Conservation Steward and Master Naturalist and volunteers as a steward for two Michigan Nature Association sanctuaries. An avid paddler\, Dan also assists on TRC paddling events and is a TRC Board member. Dan is also the author and publisher of “A Paddling Guide to the Kalamazoo River Watershed.” \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, April 24\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Our program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance of the building. \nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be emailed shortly before the meeting. We will also be recording the meeting for later viewing. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:Audubon Society Of Kalamazoo: September 2023 Presentation — SNAKES AND TURTLES AND FROGS
DESCRIPTION:We are kicking off the fall season on September 25 with a real treat — this time with critters that slither and hop! Did you know that Michigan has 18 species of snakes\, 10 turtles\, 13 frogs and toads\, 10 salamanders\, and 2 lizards? The folks from Nature Discovery will be giving a presentation on Michigan reptiles and amphibians\, complete with live specimens! They will share information about the biology and ecology of local reptiles and amphibians\, individual species’ habitats and characteristics\, and factors that may contribute to population declines and what we can do to help their survival. Nature’s Discovery has produced a CD on Frogs of the Great Lakes Region which is helpful in the spring to refresh my old memory on the various sounds of different frog species (just like getting the ears tuned up for warbler season)! Participants will have an opportunity to handle some of the animals. Jim McGrath\, the founder of Nature Discovery\, has a degree in Wildlife Biology and has over 34 years of experience as an interpretive naturalist. He works with his wife\, Carol\, who also has degrees in biology and chemistry and has worked for 24 years in wildlife education. They bring a wealth of knowledge and a love of sharing it with others. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, September 25\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. This program is geared to all audiences and we enthusiastically invite families and nature lovers of any age to join us! For this special program\, we will start earlier than usual. Come at 6:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 6:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance of the building. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO: Avian Health and Disease in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:OCTOBER MONTHLY MEETING: AVIAN HEALTH AND DISEASE IN MICHIGAN \nAs birders\, we have a great affection for birds and enjoy watching them in the field or close at hand\, at feeders in our yards. The last thing we would want is to unknowingly create a situation that could result in sick birds or disease transmission. This month we are pleased to host Julie Melotti\, Wildlife Biologist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Disease Lab\, who will update us on the current avian health issues. Her talk will cover diseases that can affect birds in Michigan and steps that you can take to mitigate disease transmission. This talk will focus on diseases spread at bird feeders like salmonellosis and mycoplasmosis\, arboviruses (West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis)\, highly pathogenic avian influenza\, botulism\, and much more. \nJulie Melotti started with the DNR in the disease lab as a seasonal employee in 2001 and eventually worked into a Senior Lab Technician position. In 2008\, she began training under Tom Cooley\, the now retired Wildlife Pathologist. When he retired\, Julie became the interim Pathologist and then was offered the position permanently in March of this year. Julie has Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at MSU with a concentration in Conservation Medicine and Disease Ecology. Her primary role is performing necropsies on wild birds and mammals to determine cause of death. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, October 23\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — Winter is Coming: How Animals Prepare for Winter
DESCRIPTION:NOVEMBER MONTHLY MEETING \nWinter is coming. I am thinking about my preparations for fall and winter. Get out sweaters\, coats\, and boots and put away the shorts and sandals. Can tomatoes and make applesauce. Pull the tomato plants out of the garden and plant a cover crop. Store bulbs from summer annuals. Make sure furnace is working. Take down screens and put up the storm windows. Phew! It’s a long list. What does the list look like for our feathered and furred friends? How do animals prepare for and cope with winter? Whether they leave\, stay active\, or sleep through the winter\, animals have a variety of physical\, physiological\, and behavioral strategies for getting ready for winter and surviving until the return of spring. \nBe sure to come to the program on November 27 to hear all about the strategies our wildlife neighbors use to handle a Michigan winter. Dr. Leah Knapp is Professor of Biology and the Biology Program Director at the University of Olivet. She earned her BS in animal science from Rutgers University\, and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree as well as post-doctoral coursework in ecology\, ornithology\, and environmental toxicology from Michigan State University. She teaches a wide range of ecology\, environmental\, and medical classes including ecosystem ecology\, genetics\, ornithology\, winter ecology\, and environmental health and oversees student-run habitat restoration and invasive species removal at Olivet’s biological preserve. She also participates in various bird counts and other species surveys for several organizations. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, November 27\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — Birds with Words: Exploring an Evolutionary Arms Race Between Yellow Warblers and Brown-headed Cowbirds
DESCRIPTION:FEBRUARY MONTHLY MEETING: “BIRDS WITH WORDS: EXPLORING AN EVOLUTIONARY ARMS RACE BETWEEN YELLOW WARBLERS AND BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS” \nThere may not exist a bird species more controversial and divisive than the Brown-headed Cowbird. It would be difficult to find a Facebook birding group without some form of slander against these birds and nearly every birder you meet will have a strong opinion of them\, either positive or negative. Cowbirds have been painted as a villain because of their brood parasitic breeding strategy in which they forgo the building of their own nests and care of their own offspring in favor of leaving their eggs in other “host” birds’ nests and letting other birds raise their young. In her talk\, Karla hopes to convince you that these host birds are not helpless and that\, despite their reputation\, cowbirds are as brilliant\, fascinating\, and worthy of our adoration as any other bird. \nOur speaker for February\, Karla Kelly\, MS\nPhD Student\, Dr. Gill’s Sound Ecology Lab\,\nDepartment of Biological Sciences\,\nWestern Michigan University\, will explore the evolutionary arms race\, or reciprocal adaptations\, between cowbirds and their most common host\, Yellow Warblers. We will see how the Yellow Warblers have a “word” for cowbirds\, explore the world of bird words\, and consider the role of cognition in host-parasite interactions. \nKarla began studying cowbirds and Yellow Warblers as a master’s student in 2021 and continues this work in 2023 as a first-year PhD student. While her master’s research focused on the cognition of referential calling\, her PhD research will dive deeper into the evolutionary origins of brood parasite-specific alarm calling\, and will test the evolutionary plasticity and adaptability of this unique behavior. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, February 26\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance. \nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — The Meadowlark Conundrum: Why many of our restored grasslands may not have grassland birds
DESCRIPTION:Grassland birds are in the steepest decline of any other habitat group in North America. In response to the continued loss of these incredible bird species and their habitat\, many well-intentioned conservationists have reconstructed prairies to provide habitat for grassland specialists. But are their efforts working\, and if not\, how come? An ongoing breeding bird monitoring program on Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy preserves may shed some light on these challenges. We’ll explore this conundrum and the wider efforts to save charismatic species like Bobolinks and Eastern meadowlarks during this joint presentation.\nThe presenters for this program are Mitch Lettow\, Stewardship Director for the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy\, and Dr. Sharon Gill\, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, March 25\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO: The Birds Along My River — Paddling With an Action Camera to Grow What We Know
DESCRIPTION:The Birds Along My River\nPaddling With an Action Camera to Grow What We Know \nKayaking has become very popular\, with several paddling groups taking advantage of the many opportunities on Southwest Michigan rivers. Combining this paddling popularity with the recent GoPro-like digital camera technology allowed for collecting data on the bird activity along these river corridors. Using experiences from recent kayak-based surveys of the St. Joseph\, Dowagiac\, and Kalamazoo Rivers\, Dr. McLaughlin\, Executive Director of the Kalamazoo River Watershed Council\, will discuss how GPS-enabled action camera video and audio collected during paddle trips can help inform and tell others about birds that are present in Michigan’s riverine habitats. Please join us!\nMonday\, April 22\, 2024\nPeople’s Church\, 758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo\nThe program begins at 7:30 PM\, refreshments at 7:00 PM.\nkalamazooaudubon.org \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — Birdman of the Senate: Senator George P. McLean and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act
DESCRIPTION:The Audubon Society of Kalamazoo’s 2024–2025 program series will commence on September 23 with some avian literature. Michigan author and historian\, Will McLean Greeley will present an overview of his book\, A Connecticut Yankee Goes to Washington: Senator George P. McLean\, Birdman of the Senate. The book is the story of how Connecticut’s George P. McLean helped establish lasting legal protections for birds\, overseeing passage of the 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act\, landmark environmental protection legislation that is still in effect today. Greeley\, McLean’s great-great nephew\, puts McLean’s victory for birds in the context of his distinguished 45-year career marked by many acts of reform during a time of widespread corruption and political instability. \nWill McLean Greeley\, a resident of Midland\, Michigan\, grew up in Kalamazoo with a passion for American history\, politics\, and birds. A graduate of Loy Norrix High School\, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Michigan and then a master’s degree from Michigan in archives administration. After retiring from a 35-year career in government and corporate market research\, he embarked upon a three-year research and writing journey to learn about his great-great uncle George P. McLean and his legacy. A Connecticut Yankee Goes to Washington is his first book. \nI have just finished Mr. Greeley’s book myself and can say his biography of Senator McLean is inspiring in terms of what one person could do in the cause of bird conservation and the impact of his efforts 100 years ago in the Progressive Era. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, September 23rd\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. This program is geared to all audiences\, and we enthusiastically invite families and nature lovers of any age to join us! Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance of the building. \nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be emailed shortly to all members before the meeting. We will also be recording the meeting for later viewing. \n~ Dave Lemberg\, Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Programs Chair
