SUMMARY:The Milkweed Community
DESCRIPTION:Join the Oakland Audubon Society for The Milkweed Community presented by Don Drife. \nIt’s well known that milkweeds are essential for the survival of that most iconic butterfly\, the Monarch. However\, milkweeds are important to many more creatures than just one kind of butterfly. Many aspects of the milkweed community are unknown even to many dedicated nature observers. \nOAS meetings are held in the Thomas Parlor Room at the First United Methodist Church of Birmingham. Please continue to enter through the main entrance (4 doors)\, and find the Thomas Parlor Room located immediately to your left upon entering. Please continue to park in the big lot off Pleasant Street at the far west end of the church. \nMeeting cancellations: If a meeting is canceled or you are unsure of the status of a meeting\,\nplease check this website\, or call a board member or the church (248-646-1200).

SUMMARY:Vacation on the Riviera Maya - Birding on Family Time
DESCRIPTION:Join the Washtenaw Audubon Society as Jacco Gelderloos offers an exploration of the bird life of the coastal Yucatan peninsula and the birding opportunities it offers. \nJacco Gelderloos was born and raised in the Netherlands\, where his father and older brother got him infected with the birding bug. After moving to the United States in the 1990s\, Jacco was fortunate enough to come into contact with the local birding community. Like many other birders new to the Ann Arbor area\, he was readily brought into the fold of the Washtenaw Wingnuts\, as well as the Washtenaw Audubon Society\, and has enjoyed every last minute of it (for better or worse). As a result\, Jacco has served as WAS Field Trip coordinator and is the current Ann Arbor CBC compiler. Over the years\, Jacco has had the opportunity to bird the Netherlands (and a few surrounding countries)\, the US\, Peru\, Puerto Rico\, Jamaica\, and Mexico\, and is hoping to both expand and intensify his birding horizons in the years to come.

SUMMARY:Avian Pigmentation
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jeffrey Mckelvey\, for the second presentation of Audubon Society of Kalamazoo’s new program season as he discusses “Avian Pigmentation.”  Birds are among the most colorful of all animals. We’ll look at some of the reasons why. Much of it is due to pigments they incorporate into their feathers. The birds synthesize some of these while others are obtained from their food. Still\, other colors are due to the refraction of light by structural elements in the feathers themselves. These various sources of color can mix and match to produce almost any hue imaginable. Thus birds can camouflage themselves to hide from predators\, make themselves attractive to potential mates and dazzle appreciative birdwatchers. \nDr. Mckelvey grew up in Latrobe\, Pennsylvania\, just east of the first ridges in the Appalachians. His family had always put out bird feeders and he could identify all the common species before learning to read. When older\, he spent much time in the mountains and woods becoming an increasingly avid bird-watcher\, which was the origin of his interest in biology.  Dr. Mckelvey received an undergraduate degree in biology at West Virginia Wesleyan College. A Ph.D. in physiology followed from Bowling Green State University.  He then moved to Grand Rapids to take a job at Aquinas College. He has been there for 31 years and currently serves as chairperson of the Department of Biology and Health Science. Dr. Mckelvey mainly teaches courses in anatomy and physiology\, but every other year he works in ornithology. He still enjoys bird-watching and talking about birds every chance he has. \nYou are invited to join us to meet and hear Dr. Mckelvey on October 23 at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Our program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear entrance of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee mug to reduce dishwashing.

SUMMARY:Those Amazing Birds Program
DESCRIPTION:Join Ed Post for the third presentation of Audubon Society Kalamazoo’s 2017-2018 program season as he focuses on “Those Amazing Birds.”  This illustrated program looks at the amazing diversity and fascinating natural history of North American birds through the eyes of a dedicated bird photographer. We’ll look at the specialized anatomy of birds\, how they care for their young\, and how they survive in extremes like the frozen tundra and blistering desert. The poetic beauty of birds will color the informative narrative about our feathered friends. \nEd Post has been a serious photographer for over 30 years. He specializes in landscape and nature photography\, but also worked as a part-time newspaper and sports photographer for 15 years.  Ed frequently teaches photography classes\, leads photography trips\, and conducts workshops.  He is widely published and he displays his work at local galleries in West Michigan. You can see some of Ed’s images here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/edpost/. \nYou are invited to meet and hear Ed on November 27 at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. SUMMARY:Program: Relationship Between Ravens and the Desert Tortoise
DESCRIPTION:Join Craig Sherwood for the fourth presentation of ASK’s new program season as he discusses “Relationship Between Ravens and the Desert Tortoise.” There are parts of this planet where change happens so slowly it can be measured more easily over millennia versus decades or days.  The Mojave Desert was until recently\, one of these ancient refuges from change; an ecosystem where the flora and fauna have become so highly specialized living in nearly uninhabitable conditions they often lack the ability to adapt to a dynamic situation. In our current age\, the iconic desert tortoise is facing a daunting challenge as it is confronted with swelling numbers of humans and the predators that prosper in their wake.  The common raven (Corvus corax) is one of these predators and the species is experiencing something of a golden age as human densities continue to increase in one of North America’s most inhospitable landscapes. \nYou will be in for a crash course on the biology and life history of the Mojave Desert Tortoise and explore how it has become intricately entwined with the explosive success of the largest species in the Corvid family.  We will look at what is being done now and where new techniques and technology are taking us as we attempt to reframe how we think about the most intelligent and opportunistic avian species in the Southwest.  What we learn in the desert may very well help to prepare us for tackling future corvid-related challenges right here at home. \nCraig Sherwood has been working in the field since 2010 after completing his undergraduate studies in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology at Michigan State University.  Seasonal work has allowed him to live and work in places from the Canadian Rockies and Interior Alaska to the scorching landscapes of the Mojave Desert. Years of work with desert tortoises has inevitably led to an interest in ravens.  He now serves as an advisor and contractor to Hardshell Labs.  Hardshell Labs is currently leading the field by spearheading the development of a variety of innovative\, non-lethal aversive conditioning techniques for dealing with raven problems. \nYou are invited to join us to meet and hear Craig Sherwood on January 22\, 2018\, at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: WAS Meeting - Demystifying Great Lakes Waterbirds in Flight - with Alison Világ
DESCRIPTION:For many of us\, identifying ducks\, loons\, and grebes in flight comes with a high intimidation factor: these waterbirds travel quickly and seem just subtly different. But lakewatching offers some of Michigan’s most exciting birding opportunities. Join Alison Világ\, who’s conducted WPBO’s waterbird count for three seasons\, as she breaks down her methods of unraveling these sorts of identifications.\nAlison Világ grew up with the Berrien Bird Club in southwest Michigan and currently calls Traverse City home. She worked at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory as waterbird counter and Piping Plover monitor from 2019 through early fall 2020\, and then counted waterbirds further west on Lake Superior in October 2020.\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/97648849414\nOr dial-in: +1 312 626 6799\nMeeting ID: 976 4884 9414\nNo password\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: WAS Meeting - The Delisting of the Gray Wolf: A Conservation’s Call to Action
DESCRIPTION:The Delisting of the Gray Wolf:  A Conservation’s Call to Action\n\nGray Wolves were delisted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services in the entire lower 48 states\, effective January 4\, 2021. Given that the Gray Wolf has viable populations in only a handful of states\, this seems to be an effort to prevent\, not encourage\, further recovery of a still endangered species. Join Washtenaw Audubon’s Conservation Chair\, Cathy Theisen\, DVM\, to examine why this unusual and scientifically unsound interpretation of the Endangered Species Act should be of concern to conservationists\, birders and wildlife watchers everywhere. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: WAS Meeting - The Kirtland's Warbler: From the brink of extinction to a new model for endangered species conservation
DESCRIPTION:The Kirtland’s Warbler\, once on the brink of extinction\, was removed from the Endangered Species List in 2019. There are lots of reasons to celebrate\, but we can’t say we’re done and walk. The continuing conservation of the Kirtland’s Warbler has special challenges. The Kirtland’s Warbler is “conservation reliant\,” which means that humans will need to continue to intervene on its behalf for as long as we can see into the future. But\, that intervention will include some bold new thinking.\n\nBill Rapai is executive director of the Kirtland’s Warbler Alliance\, a nonprofit formed in 2013 to support Kirtland’s Warbler conservation. He is also the author of The Kirtland’s Warbler: The story of a bird’s fight for survival and the people who saved it\, published in 2012 by University of Michigan Press.\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99024353948\nOr dial-in: +1 312 626 6799\nMeeting ID: 990 2435 3948\nNo password\n\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event.
