SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — Beliize\, the Birding Nation (Zoom only)
DESCRIPTION:The Audubon Society of Kalamazoo’s January program will be held on Monday the 20th (the 3rd Monday in January instead of the 4th). As has been our practice recently\, the January program will be online through a Zoom feed only (the link will be emailed a few days before the meeting and included in this description). Roni Martinez will be presenting on Belize\, the Birding Nation. \nBoard member\, Dave Lemberg\, met Roni last December. Dave and Bridget (his wife) had arranged a birding tour customized to our interests through Whitehawk Birding\, an international birding tour company that has built a network of quality guides around the world. Whitehawk and Roni put together a birding tour that covered Belize from one end to the other\, customized to our birding priorities and other interests. In our January program\, Roni will highlight the birding regions and special birds of his country\, followed by some of the programs and achievements of the Belize Bird Conservancy. \nBelize is a unique country and a unique birding destination. Belize is quite accessible to the American birder – there are many flights – English is the official language – the US dollar and credit cards are accepted. There are few places with so much geographic diversity – coral reefs\, coastal lowlands and wetlands\, and highland forests and wetlands. Belize is a birders’ paradise with colorful endemics as well a wealth of migrants coming through a junction of flyways from both North and South America over the course of the seasons. Belize has been actively working to conserve their environmental treasures\, and the program will conclude with some highlights of some of those efforts. \nRoni was born in Belize and started working as a natural history guide at Blancaneaux Lodge in Belize from 2004 until 2009. It was there that he developed a passion for birds and other wildlife\, as well as conservation. In 2009\, Roni became Blancaneaux’s first Conservation Officer and the first for Belize. As a result of this position\, he worked along with many different researchers and conservation non-profits who share the same vision. Currently\, his work involves research and collaboration on several projects related to birds with numerous organizations including Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association\, Toledo Institute for Development and Environment\, and Belize Audubon Society. Roni served as the Belize Raptor Research Institute’s President from 2010–2016. His work with other conservation organizations has been crucial in maintaining a proactive effort in conserving biodiversity in Belize. \nWe hope you’ll join us a little earlier in January\, on Monday\, January 20\, at 7:30 PM via Zoom. There are two reasons for holding this meeting via Zoom only. One\, our speaker is coming to us via Zoom\, so we won’t have an in-person presenter\, and two\, January can be a treacherous driving month if we get snow. \nThe Zoom link for this presentation is – https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81247289679\nWe will also be recording the meeting for later viewing and will share the link on our Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/AudubonSocietyofKalamazoo/ \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — The Migratory Ecology of Red-Tailed Hawks in the Great Lakes Region
DESCRIPTION:Michigan is home to many raptor species. Some\, like Short-eared Owls\, Snowy Owls\, or Golden Eagles\, grace us with their presence only occasionally and attract forays of excited birders to see them while they are visiting. Other species are abundant year-round residents that we see frequently and that don’t garner the excitement of the more “exotic” species. They may seem rather\, hmmm…boring: “Oh\, just another Red-tailed Hawk.” Well\, that’s only because you haven’t yet heard Nick Alioto’s presentation! Nick’s program on this well-known but little-studied species has fascinating active graphics of their travels around the area and highlights new information about this species. You may no longer think of them as boring! \nNick will provide background on the Red-tailed Hawk project and shine light on all the various aspects of research this group is focused on. He will then discuss how he became interested and involved in studying Red-tailed Hawks and why the Straits of Mackinac serve as an ideal location to study this species. Nick will also talk about what we have learned from tracking these birds over the last four years. Specifically\, he will focus on the migratory ecology of the Great Lakes population with emphasis on migratory routes\, breeding and wintering locations\, and dark morph individuals. \nNick Alioto is originally from Ontario\, Canada. He obtained his BS in 2016 from Bishops’ University in Quebec\, Canada. Currently he is a PhD student at Michigan State University where he studies the migration of Red-tailed Hawks in Michigan. This project is in collaboration with the Red-tailed Hawk project and the Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch. Nick has been working on migration related projects since 2016 and specifically with Red-tailed Hawks since 2019. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, February 24\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. It’s helpful if you bring your own coffee cup. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance. \nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be available shortly before the meeting in the March newsletter and on our website – https://kalamazooaudubon.org/calendar/\nWe will also be recording the meeting for later viewing. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — Michigan Motus Array: Exciting Detections in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, Rich and Brenda Keith attended the annual meeting of Eastern Bird Banders in West Virginia. Stu MacKenzie from Bird Studies Canada spoke on the Motus Project that was launched in 2014. In Stu’s presentation he showed slides of Gray-cheeked Thrush banded in traditional and shade grown coffee plantations being detected at Motus stations going north\, until they reached Michigan. Stu’s observation “we need Motus stations in Michigan” was taken as a command by Rich. The Michigan Motus Array presently has 20 stations with 8 more funded and going up in 2025 plus more in the works. Rich and Brenda will speak to their experiences and findings since joining the Motus Project. \nLongtime Audubon Society of Kalamazoo members Rich and Brenda Keith began working with the research program at the Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC) as volunteers in the mid-1980s. Both were eventually hired by the KNC in the bird banding program. That program expanded to include the Keiths’ 43-acre property near Vicksburg\, Michigan\, now known as the Pitsfield Banding Station. That site as well as the KNC and Fort Custer Training Center are part of the Kalamazoo Valley Bird Observatory under Rich’s direction. In addition to banding birds\, Rich and Brenda have also contributed to a variety of bird-related research projects\, the Michigan Breeding Bird Atlas\, winter feeder surveys\, and Christmas Bird Counts. Both are certified hummingbird banders\, a designation achieved by very few in Michigan. In 2018\, they began work on the Motus Tower project across lower and upper Michigan. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, March 24\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. It’s helpful if you bring your own coffee cup. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Hope Ave.\, Lansing\, MI 48910. \nThis free\, family-friendly event is your chance to witness one of nature’s most mesmerizing sky shows: hundreds of Chimney Swifts swirling in a tornado-like formation before swooping into their evening roost. It’s a magical\, urban wildlife spectacle you won’t want to miss! Please bring a chair if you would like to sit while watching. \nArrive early to chat with fellow bird lovers and ask Michigan Audubon’s Conservation Manager\, Chad Machinski\, M.S.\, all your swift-related questions—he’ll be on hand to share his knowledge and enthusiasm! \nOf course\, in true birdwatching fashion\, we wait with bated breath each evening—because swifts are wild creatures\, and they don’t always RSVP. But that just makes the moment they do appear even more thrilling! \nThese incredible birds have faced steep population declines due to habitat loss\, insecticide use\, and climate change. At the event\, you’ll also learn how you can help protect them through conservation and citizen science efforts. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Manager Chad Machinski\, M.S.\, at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7564. \nYou can learn more about World Migratory Bird Day at https://www.migratorybirdday.org/. \n  \n
